Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20 plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the turn signal/cruise/wiper activator stalk on this 1986 GMC Jimmy, same as a whole bunch of different GM cars from the '80s and to the early '90s with this type of stalk. The only tools you'll need, you'll need a string or a piece of wire and also maybe some pliers and a flashlight will help.

To replace one of these stalks is pretty easy. This is your cruise control switch, but it's not actually your wiper switch. It's a activator for your wiper switch. Your wiper switch is actually in the steering column, but to replace this stalk, you basically just pull out firmly and then you want to kind of leave it right here.

What you need to do now is find the other end of this wire underneath the dash. On this truck what I'm going to do is I'm going to take out three screws in this part. It's going to differ depending on your vehicle. If you don't have AC then you can probably find this wire pretty easily. This truck has AC so I have to take out the lower AC duct. I'm just loosening up. I took out one screw, I'm loosening up two others. Then on this truck, my AC duct, just kind of pulls right out here. You may want to put your head up under here and shake this wire back and forth and you can see the wire and where it connects into. On this vehicle, it connects into a clip.

I'm going to take this out of its place and disconnect the lead. There's your lead. Here's the end of my lead. I got a piece of wire here and there's a little hole in it. I put my wire through that hole, bend it and secure it on here. Now, what I can do is kind of feed everything up in there. It goes right up into here. Then it comes right out. Now, you're going to unhook your wire. Here's my new one from 1A Auto and you can see, it's all the same. Many times the reason you want to replace these is just because the graphics on a new one are so much nicer and brighter and generally and sometimes this piece here will break off.

To reinstall, I'm just actually going to take my wire or maybe I'll use string or whatever. I'm just going re-strip it and do a nice new string. That way I know nothing will happen. It won't break or something. A couple of things I found. You can just take this sheath and kind of pull it right out of there because you can actually just slide that in afterwards. Also, this little insulator that goes onto here, while it's a good thing if you can get it down in there, most of the time what I find is it just provides just a little too much bulk to get everything down through.

Take your wire. Make sure it gets started into the right area, down underneath that switch. You see I'm kind of twisting the wire that just kind of gets the connector to twist around a little bit. Now, you can see I've got the connector down on this end so I'm going to pull it up through. I am going to put my switch in and push it all the way in. Now, what I'm going do, I'm going to take this plastic sheath and I press the wire into it and then I can just slide the sheath right up on the wire in the column and that protects it than the columns, tilting. Now, I can connect the harness. I can clip it back into where it goes. Then I'll put my AC duct back in and we're all set.
