Hey, friends. It's Len here 1A Auto. Today, we're working on our 1996 Dodge RAM 1500. This is a 5.9 liter and I want to show you something very basic, replacing the breather grommet. This goes right into the valve cover and it's super easy. I can do it. You can do it too. As always, if you need any parts, you can always check us out at 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
Okay, so we're under the hood. We're on the driver's side. This right here is your breather. You have your hose that comes from this way right down into it, and then you've got your valve cover right there. What happens is the gases that build up inside your engine, they come up through here, through your breather and then up through this hose and they get re-burnt through your engine. So we'll just grab this hose. Let's try to give it a little twist. Pop it off of there. The breather itself is held in by a rubber grommet inside the valve cover. I'll just pull that up. There you go. There's your breather. So now that we have the breather out of the way, we can get right to the grommet. Move this hose out of the way.
Generally speaking, it's a good idea to clean up around the area. Do the best you can. Just use a rag. I'm just going to go like this. Is it perfect? No. If you want to spend more time doing it, please feel free. You can come over and do this one if you want. I'm going to use a pocket screwdriver. I'm going to go right along the valve cover until it bottoms out up against the grommet itself. Then I'm going to go like this. Go down into the valve cover and then kind of peel this up. There's our breather grommet. If you wanted to replace this, you can go on 1AAuto.com and get yourself a new one.
Okay, so before we go ahead and install our grommet, we're just going to wipe down the area now that we have a nice clear view of it. That looks pretty great. We'll take our grommet, this side goes down. The nice flappy side, the bigger area goes on the top of the valve cover. That's going to help keep moisture from getting in. Okay. Take our grommet, start from one side, just kind of help it along. I push as I push down. I push this way and down, so in towards the center and down. There we are. That fit in there great. Now we'll grab our breather and we'll go ahead and install that.
Okay, so now we're going to go ahead with the re-install. Just take this. If you want to, you could use a little bit of lubricant on there. It's completely up to you. Just press it down, give it a little wiggle. That feels pretty great. We're going to take this just slide this right on here. Make sure that's on and that's on. There we are. Easy peasy.
