Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the brake light switch on this 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo. It's the same parts and similar process on these Monte Carlos from 1996 to 2005. The items you'll need for this includes a new brake light switch from 1AAuto.com, a 7mm socket, a ratchet, a pair of pliers and a flat blade screwdriver.
Underneath your steering wheel, you'll see this panel. You want to just push in these two tabs and pull it down. Then twist the socket free and pull the bulb out. Then you want to remove these two 7mm screws. Pull out your fuse panel door, especially make sure that the lower clip comes out. Then pull straight back on the lower panel on both sides. Then use a small flat blade screwdriver to help you release the clip on the harness to remove the harness. The brake light switch is right here with two harnesses connected to it. You want to just push the tabs on the harnesses and disconnect them. Now twist the brake light switch out counterclockwise.
Okay, once the light switch comes out, there is another clip in here and a lot of times the problem is this clip and the switch the threads will get worn and so the switch will not work correctly. So you may need to basically break this clip out and your new switch from 1A Auto comes with a new clip. On the left is the old brake light switch; on the right is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical, and they'll fit exactly the same.
Without installing the clip, take your brake light switch and feed it through that hole. You want to press it in against the brake pedal rug. Just mark it with a marker. Then pull it up so that it's up against the brake pedal rod, but not actually pressed in against it. Then put another mark. So the first mark, I wasn't pressing it against the pedal rod and the second mark is when I was pressing it in against the pedal rod. So I'm actually going to set this right in between them. That will be my preliminary sign.
Push the brake light switch back up into place, then reconnect your two harnesses. Give it a quick test. Just push on the brake pedal and check to see if the light's coming on. You can see that it is. Reconnect the harness to your trunk switch. Then push this panel back up into place. Then replace those two 7mm bolts underneath the panel. Push the bulb back into the socket and twist it back into this panel. Then feed the panel back. Then push it back up into place.
