The air box is located on the front passenger side of the engine compartment in this 4L Ranger. There are two tabs located on the engine side of the filter here that we'll push in and lift up to release. Pull the air box lid towards the motor to release the hinges from the box. Remove your old air filter.
Here we have our old filter and a nice new filter for our truck. The old filter isn't terrible, but you can see where dirt builds up in the paper filter element here. Over time that gets worse. Parts can get clogged or torn. Any restriction to air flow in your engine is going to reduce power output and fuel economy. Your engine is basically a giant air pump. The more air you get in and out, more efficiently, the better the engine's going to run, and the more power it's going to make and the more economical it's going to be with fuel. This is a simple maintenance piece that's can really help keep the performance of your vehicle in tip top shape.
We'll re-install our filter into the air box. Slide the air box back into its hinges and then push down to reengage the clips. Give it a quick check to make sure it locked together and you're good to go.
