How to Replace 4WD Four Wheel Drive Switch 2003-06 Chevy Avalanche 1500

Created on: 2017-08-16

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a damaged, worn out, faulty or shorted 4wd switch on 03, 04, 05, 06 Chevy Avalanche.

  1. step 1 :Removing the 4WD Switch
    • Pop out the dashboard trim by hand
    • Turn the ignition on
    • Shift the shifter to its lowest position
    • Lower the steering wheel to its lowest position
    • Remove the dash trim
    • Place the vehicle in park
    • Pry out the switch with a trim tool by pressing the tabs
    • Disconnect the wiring harnesses
  2. step 2 :Installing the 4WD Switch
    • Connect the connectors
    • Press the switch into the dash
    • Shift the shifter to its lowest position
    • Press on the dashboard trim
    • Place the vehicle in park
    • Raise the steering column

To remove the 4-wheel-drive switch, I grab the dashboard trim and pop it out by hand. Put my keys in the ignition and put my foot on the brake. Just turn the ignition on. I'm just going to shift the shifter all the way down so I have some space, and then we can move the steering wheel down. Lift it out, hit the hazard switch, and put that back. Put the vehicle back in park. Turn the ignition off.

Let's move our steering column up a bit. There are two clips, two tabs actually: one here and one here. These are plastic trim tools. You can get these from 1AAuto.com. Just pry up here and I'll pry up here. Work the switch out. Pull it out of the dash. You need to disconnect the electrical connections. Push this tab and flip it open. Pull the connector out. Same on this one. Pull it up and over the lock. The switch is removed from the dashboard.

Install the new switch. Reconnect the electrical connectors. These are keyed, they'll only go on one way. Make sure they snap into place. New switch, push it up into the opening and lock at the top and on the side. Then, move the steering wheel back down. I'm going to turn the ignition on, put my foot on the brake, and shift the shifter down. Slide our trim panel back on. Make sure you get it around the shifter. Slide back in. Clip into place. Then go back in park, turn the ignition off. The switch is replaced.
