How To Remove Front Door Panel 1998-2001 VW Passat

step 1 :Removing the Door Pull Panel
- Using a flat blade screwdriver, carefully pry out the inner panel of your door pull
- Once that is out, take your flat blade screwdriver and pry up the rear of your door pull panel
- You'll find that there are clips around the edge of that panel.
- Give the panel a firm pull, and it'll come right out
- Before pulling away from the door, disconnect the wire on the back of the handle

step 2 :Detaching the Door Panel
- In the hole left by the Door Pull panel, you'll see three Phillips screws
- On the bottom of the door, you see two T25 screws. These are what are keeping the door panel on the door
- Remove the Phillips screws
- Remove the Torx screws
- Pull the bottom of the panel out a little, and get your knife inside
- Pry up until you hear the clips pop out
- Repeat around both sides of the door
- Once these are all released, pull the panel out and then up.

step 3 :Disconnecting the Door Handle
- To disconnect the door handle, pull the door handle out a little as though you're opening the door
- While you're doing that, push the small hook up through, and then the door handle slides right out

step 4 :Disconnecting the Harnesses
- Once the handle is off, you'll see that there is a series of harnesses
- They all just have little tabs that you push down and pull the connector out
- The only one that's different is the courtesy light at the bottom of the door
- This connector has little ears that you need to pry out with a screwdriver while pulling them down.

step 5 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- When you're ready to reinstall, plug each harness back into the proper spot. Put the courtesy light back in
- Put your door handle into through the panel, replace the hook, and pull it back into place.
- Put your lock up through and push the panel back into place.
- Make sure to pop all your clips back into the door
- Replace the two T25 screws back in, followed by the Phillips screws.
- Put the switch back down into place and make sure it locks in well.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to remove and reinstall the driver's side front door panel on this 2001 VW Passat. This is the older body style this procedure's the same for the '98 to '01 Passat.
The tools you'll need are a flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a T25 torx driver, and you'll either need a door panel clip tool or, if you don't have one of those, a putty knife will work as well.
You want to start by using a flat blade screwdriver. There's a little inner panel on your door pull, and you pry that out right in the middle, and then take it out carefully. Now use your flat blade screwdriver and pry in the back. There are clips all around the edge of that panel, you just pull it up, it takes a firm pull, but it comes right out, and then on the bottom side there is a connector, just press the tab and pull the connector free.
Where you remove that panel from, there are three Phillips screws that hold the panel to the door, and underneath there are two T25 screws that hold the panel to the door. I'm going to fast forward here as I remove those three screws. Be careful not to drop them. You might use a magnet to pull them out of the little caverns they're in and then remove the screws from down at the bottom. Now that it's unscrewed, get either a putty knife or a door panel clip tool. Pull the bottom out some, put your knife in, go in till it stops. Pull, going until it stops again. Then take it to the back side. Now with those clips released, pull the panel out and then up.
To disconnect the door handle, pull the door handle out a little, like you're opening a door, and then push this hook up through, and then it should slide right out. After your door handle's disconnected, there is a series of harnesses. They all just have little tabs that you push down and pull the connector out. It's hard to video really any of them. The only difference is the light, the courtesy light at the bottom of the door has little ears that you need to pry out with a screwdriver. Then pull them down. All these different connectors just have tabs to either push, or the courtesy light, you need to pry up on these tabs to pull it out. All these just have tabs, then push. Clean it off, and you just do it just like this. You can see in here pretty well. Put it in the right spot. Put in your light. Make sure that goes up into there. Connect this there, this here. Put your door panel in. Put the hook into the door handle and pull it back, and push it back in place. then push your panel closer. You're going to put your lock on up through. Again, make sure you have your power windows connected. Push the panel and lock the clip on.
Speed it up substantially, pop all your clips back into the door, and then put the two lower screws back in. I found it easiest just to actually get right down there so you could see. Put them in, then put your three Phillips screws in that hold the middle of the panel. Put the switch back down into place, make sure you lock it in there well.
