How to Remove Front Bumper Cover 1982-92 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z

In this video, we're going to remove the front nose cone or bumper cover on this 1986 Camaro IROC-Z. You'll need jack and jack stands you need to lift it up some so you can get under there and get to some of the fasteners. You also need a flat blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, 10mm socket (a deep socket or a longer socket is better), ratchet and 6 inch extension, and then a 9/32 socket with a ratchet and extension.

Now we're going to remove the front nose and this air dam. You can remove these in two separate pieces. This air dam is one piece. If you're just removing this air dam, go up underneath, and there are three nuts here: one, two, and then a third one right up in there. Then you would want to remove all these 10mm bolts all the way around. I'm just going to say, from experience: make sure you use lots of penetrating oil when you take those bolts apart. That lets the air dam come off. I'm going to take this off. I'm going to take the nose and air dam off at once.

The first thing is you're going to want to do is jack the car up on jack stands or a lift. A lift's not necessary, but it definitely makes it easier to film. Come up underneath and, again, these three bolts that hold that effect to the fender. Then there's two more you want to get from underneath right here. Those hold the nose to the fender in the front. You want to do that for each side.

Additionally, you can see this clip right here, there should be a bolt from the other side going through right here. On this car, it is missing. It's actually missing on both sides, so this car must have been apart for some reason before and they didn't bother to put it back together quite the way it should. Also, you'll want to press and rotate your parking light bulbs and remove those.

It's always a good idea to use a little penetrant. Soak these and soak those, and let them sit for a little bit. Here I'm going to do some crazy fast-forwarding. These three bolts, they are corroded and rusted. One of them ends up breaking off, which is all right because you can actually force the stud out of the little retaining strip and then just replace it with a bolt. Another one comes off fine, and then the last one of the three, they put a bolt in place of it and they didn't use a washer, so I couldn't get a hold of the head of the bolt.

Basically, what I ended up doing is just using a screwdriver and prying the retaining strip out, not the best way to do it. I can fix the retaining strip and put it back together, but it's just what I had to do to get it done. Now, we're looking from the wheel towards the front of the vehicle. You can see I put the socket onto one of the bolts. Here I didn't have a deep socket, I'm just using a regular socket, and then I threaded my extension and ratchet into it and then removed it.

Like I say in the beginning, a deep socket is better for here, but you can use a standard socket, you just have to be careful with it. I'll just fast-forward through the rest of removing those two nuts. There also should be a little pin right here that you would pull the center out, and pull the clip out, but again, it's missing on this car. Now you can see that this is loose and the lower part of our nose is loose as well.

On this side, you're going to have a vacuum canister. Let's see, it hangs down something like that. It's kind of in your way. You might be able to work around it. There are just two bolts that you can get from the top side. Mine's been broken off already. You can see here there's the bottom of one of the bolts. You can undo the two bolts from the top side, and you can pull that down easily enough.

The next step is to remove a series of clips and these have a little there's a pin that pushes in the middle and then the clip pulls down. There's a set in behind here, and I believe what these mount is another air dam which is apparently missing on this vehicle like a lot of things. To remove these, you'll need a 13mm wrench to hold onto a bolt on top. I'm actually going to hook another wrench into that to help me hold it. I'm just going to fast-forward here. This bolt and nut are pretty challenging, but I managed to get them out.

Now that you have those out of the way, you want to pull out these pins here, another one here, here, here, here, and here. What you want to do is take a flat blade screwdriver, pry on the middle, and once you get them started stick a pair of needle nose pliers in, pull them down, and they pull right out.

On this side, you want to have removed your battery, and then you're going to reach right in here. You're going to feel a nut right up in here, 10mm, and then one down lower. You need to remove those. For the top one, it's going to be easiest to go in without an extension, and you'll see me do that in a minute. Then, for this lower one, you want your 6 inch extension on there. You can see I'm going in there. I've got my socket on it and I can turn it. Just fast-forward as I just show you this is kind of the angles I'm taking to get to those two bolts. It's probably the hardest part of it. I'm just reaching up in there with no extension and then taking the lower one off with the extension.

The top one, it spins actually easier with my fingers, so I work my finger in there and spin it off the rest of the way with my finger. Now there are seven 9/32 bolts that I remove here. Just use some fast-forward again as I remove those seven bolts from the front. You want to take off your air cleaner assembly and set that to the side. A flat blade screwdriver, pry up some more tabs here. There are two additionally over here, but it's been broken on this vehicle. This assembly comes up and out.

Now you want to undo four bolts for your headlights right here. One, two, and then on the other side, three, and four. Once again, we'll just fast-forward as I remove those four bolts. Those are the bolts that are holding the brackets from the headlight panel to the body.

Two nuts right here, a little bit of penetrant on them. You want to reach in behind and disconnect all your headlights. Carefully make sure that your front end is pulled out over here and give it a little bit of a wiggle. Same thing ground effects pulled out. Just go nice and slow and unplug this driving light. Reach right around behind and there your nose off.
