In this video we're going to be working with our 2008 Chevy Equinox. We're going to show you all the safe places under your vehicle that you can raise it up and support it with a jack and jack stands. The majority of the repairs we show you how to do can be done in the driveway at home using the jack and jack stands, as long as you know the safe places to secure your vehicle.

The only items you'll need here are a jack and a good set of jack stands.

Depending on what type of work you're doing to the vehicle, and which end you need off the ground, and what parts of the vehicle you're going to be working on, there's a lot of places under here that you can safely support and raise the vehicle from.

For starters, we have our front sub frame here. See this metal goes all the way around the engine cradle. Anywhere on here is going to be a good place to jack up from because it's nice solid steel, and you can put your jack stands under here anywhere that you can get them to lay flat and even around the frame.

You don't want them cocked on an angle or not seated fully onto the jack stands or leaning one way or the other. Depending on the situation, the control arms are metal and also an acceptable place to jack up from. These are a little trickier to support with a jack stand, so go right onto the frame here again. Being a uni-body vehicle, we can also jack from the pinch welds here where you can see I have my lift arms. There's actually a little cut out in this plastic liner where you can see a little bit better. You'll see that when it's not on the lift. We have the uni-rail here which goes all the way down under the vehicle. Any of these locations would also be safe to raise and support from as this is the vehicle's frame so to speak. It's not a fully boxed frame like an old pickup truck would have, but this is what they would call the uni-rail. It does the same thing, so you can raise and support here on either side as well.

In the rear of the vehicle, we have the rear sub-frame and the rear control arms which are steel. The control arms can be jacked up from, and then you would support your vehicle from this sub-frame, or you could raise it from here as well as support if from here. This vehicle unfortunately has an aluminum differential in the back. This is not an okay place to jack up from or support the vehicle from as the aluminum is a little more brittle and not as strong as the steel is.

While it's perfectly fine for what it does housing the differential, it's not an acceptable place to support the weight of the vehicle from. Depending on what portion of the vehicle you're working on and what areas you're going to have to access and remove, these are all the safest locations to raise and support your vehicle from.
