How To Install replace The Air Conditioning Compressor Belt 2001-06 Hyundai Elantra 2-0L

step 1 :Disconnecting the Battery
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket and ratchet

step 2 :Removing the Alternator Belt
- Loosen the 12mm bolt from the alternator belt adjuster
- Loosen the 12mm nut from the alternator
- Loosen the adjuster with a 12mm wrench
- Push the alternator aside
- Pull the belt off the alternator

step 3 :Removing the A/C Compressor Belt
- Remove the two 10mm bolts from the passenger side splash shield
- Loosen the 12mm adjuster on the A/C belt tensioner pulley
- Loosen the 14mm bolt in the tensioner pulley
- Continue to loosen the 12mm adjuster on the tensioner pulley
- Pull off the A/C compressor belt

step 4 :Installing the A/C Compressor Belt
- Feed the belt over the A/C compressor pulleys
- Feed the belt over the tensioner
- Tighten the 12mm tensioner adjuster until the belt moves 1/8" by hand
- Tighten the 14mm bolt into the tensioner

step 5 :Installing the Alternator Belt
- Feed the alternator belt into place
- Tighten the alternator belt tensioner until the belt moves 1/8" by hand
- Tighten the 12mm bolt into the alternator adjuster
- Tighten the 12mm nut onto the alternator
- Lift the splash shield into place
- Insert the two 10mm bolts into the splash shield

step 6 :Connecting the Battery
- Connect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket and ratchet

In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall the air conditioning compressor belt on this 2005 Hyundai Elantra. It's pretty much the same for any era Elantra. You'll probably need jack and jack stands, in the video we do it on a lift so it's easy enough to get in there but I think you may want to jack up the front passenger side tire and remove it and that will give you easy access. You'll also probably want a lug wrench or 21mm socket with a breaker bar to get the lug nuts off your tire; then 10, 12, 14mm wrenches and also a socket and ratchet; and maybe a pipe for some extra leverage.
I'm using a 10mm socket wrench to remove the negative from the battery. Set that aside.
I've located the 12mm bolt that holds the adjuster on the alternator, I'm going to slack off that. Use a pipe for extra leverage. I've located the lower nut for the alternator right here, right next to the oil filter. I'll use my 12mm wrench and a pipe for some extra leverage. I'm taking the tension off the adjuster with a 12mm wrench. With my tensioner loose, I can push the alternator forward and sneak the belt off.
Here I'm working behind the passenger side front tire and there are two 10mm bolts that hold a splash shield in place: one near the front, one near the rear. Remove those bolts and take this splash shield out of the way.
Locate your A/C belt tensioner pulley and the 12mm adjuster right here. I'm going to loosen this up. Now I'm going to go ahead and loosen up this 14mm bolt in the center of the pulley. Now we're just loosening up that tensioner bolt more. Then go ahead and loosen it up until you've got enough room to get your belt off.
Go ahead and feed the belt back up over the A/C compressor, make sure it's on there correctly. I'm going to pull it over the crank, feed it over the tensioner, once I know everything is okay there I can tighten up the tensioner. Make sure you've got enough tension on the belt; it wants to be tight but has a little bit of flex. You should be able to move the belt up and down about an 1/8 of an inch once it's tight. Once that's all set, tighten up the 14mm on the end of the pulley.
Put the alternator belt back up. Let me get it on the top pulley first and get it around the alternator and around the crank. I'm going to fast forward here slightly. The belt's back on and now we're re-tightening that tensioner. Basically you want to tighten it up until you can grab the belt between the pulleys and you should be able to move the belt up and down between an 1/8 and a 1/4 of an inch, actually closer to 1/8 of an inch. Once it's that tight then you can use your 12mm and tighten the bolt that's on the back of the tensioner that goes into the alternator. I'm tightening up the lower nut on the alternator.
I'm reconnecting the battery.
