Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the outside door handle on the front of this 1997 Dodge Intrepid, the same as any '93 to '97. The tools you'll need include a flat blade and Phillips screwdrivers, and an 8 millimeter socket with a ratchet and extension.
Start by disconnecting your negative battery cable using a 10 millimeter wrench. This is really just to prevent your battery from running down while you have the door open. Remember to reconnect it at the end. Use a flat blade screwdriver. Pry the front of your speaker grille out, and then pull the grille off.
There are seven screws: there are two on either side of your speaker, one down at the bottom off the door, one up in here behind the door handle, one down in here in the pull cup, and then one here on the back edge of the door. I'm just going to fast-forward as I remove seven Phillips screws. Once those screws are out, take the panel and lift the cup. Now, in behind, there is a clip here. Push it off with your thumb, and pull this rod up and out. Door panel comes off enough for you to work.
Once your door panel is off, you want to look right back in here. You see right here, there are two clips. Push this bottom one that way. Pull this rod out and then push this top one. Let's see if it will focus here. Push this top off that way and pull that out. Up top, you can see there's a white clip. You can see it better right through here, two 8 millimeter bolts. Remove those. I'm going to speed it up here as I just remove those 8 millimeter bolts using an 8 millimeter socket with a ratchet and extension. Inside, I'm going to reach inside and push the handle out. Obviously, our handle is in fine shape, but I'm just going to show you. If you wanted to change it over, you'd have to switch the lock over. Basically, you just take a good-sized screwdriver and pry this clip out here. Then your lock pulls right out.
The new handle will come with a clip inside already. This is designed so that you can just take the lock, push it right in, and the clip will hold it. Then, obviously, switch this rod over where it's just unclipping the clip here. Take the rod out, and put it into the new handle. Clip the rod back on. Reinstallation: putting your handle down in. Twist it in like that. You've just got to find the place, and it snaps into place. With this clip, this part goes towards the bottom of the door handle. There's the clip in there. Take your 8 millimeter bolts, and reach up in there and start one, start the other one. Fast-forward as I tighten those bolts. You want to tighten them firm, but do not over-tighten them. Take our larger one, put it in. Put the clip on, smaller one in and the clip on.
Put the door panel back on. Lift it up. You can see down there, you want to put the tabs into the door at the bottom. Then lift it close and reconnect. Put it up into place. Make sure your lock is through. Push it against the door and slide it down on. I'm going to really speed it up here as I put those 7 screws back in. For this door panel, it's pretty easy to put back on. You just make sure it's in place. Make sure all the hooks are in place. Make sure the top is correct. Push it in and down, and then replace all these screws and your speaker grille.
