How To Install Replace Coolant Thermostat 1992-98 Honda Civic 1-6L

step 1 :Draining the Coolant
- Have a drain pan ready
- Loosen the radiator drain plug
- Twist off the radiator cap
- Allow the coolant to drain
- Tighten the drain plug

step 2 :Removing the Thermostat
- Loosen the radiator hose clamp with pliers
- Pull the radiator hose off the thermostat housing
- Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor wiring harness
- Remove the top 10mm bolt from the thermostat housing
- Remove the bottom 10mm bolt from the thermostat housing
- Have a drain pan ready
- Pull off the thermostat housing
- Pull the thermostat out

step 3 :Installing the Thermostat
- Clean the thermostat housing with an emery cloth
- Put the thermostat into place with the pin at the top
- Put the thermostat housing into place
- Insert the two 10mm bolts into the thermostat
- Clean the thermostat housing hose mounting area with an emery cloth
- Connect the temperature sensor wiring harness
- Push the radiator hose onto the thermostat hosing
- Tighten the radiator hose clamp with pliers

step 4 :Refilling the Coolant
- Add coolant to the radiator using a funnel
- Twist on the radiator cap
- Run the engine briefly
- Twist off the coolant bottle cap
- Add coolant to the coolant bottle using a funnel
- Twist on the coolant bottle cap
- Run the engine briefly
- Add more coolant as necessary
- Twist on the coolant bottle cap

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the engine thermostat on this 1998 Honda Civic with the 1.6 liter, 4 cylinder engine. The items you'll need for this are a pair of pliers, a flat blade screwdriver, 10 millimeter socket and ratchet, emery cloth, drip pan, funnel, and coolant.
To start off, you're going to want to drain your coolant. Right here is the drain plug. You just turn this white part right here and the coolant will start pouring out. Put a drip pan underneath it and just twist that switch. You'll see the coolant start to trickle out. Now, remove the radiator cap and that coolant will start pouring out quicker. Tighten up your drain.
Right here, on this clamp, you just want to push these two teeth together with a pair of pliers and just pull that clamp back. Now, you can just move the hose back and forth until it comes off. This harness right here plugs into your coolant temperature sensor. To disconnect it, you just need to push down the tab and pull it out. You can use a flat blade screwdriver or pliers to help you out with this. Now, you need to remove this 10 millimeter bolt right here. Down here, there's two 10 millimeter bolts. You just want to remove that lower one. We'll fast forward as Don removes these. Pull the outer part out and set it aside. Then, you can just pull your thermostat out. It may take a little maneuvering but it will pull out. You want to make sure you have a drip pan underneath it because some coolant will come out.
Now, use an emery cloth to clean up some of this dried coolant on this outer part here. Now, put your new thermostat down into place with that pin at the top. Put that outer part back on. We'll just fast forward as Don replaces those bolts and tightens them up. Use an emery cloth or something similar to just clean off where that hose connects. Plug in your harness onto the coolant temperature sensor and replace that hose. Using a pair of pliers, slide that clip back up into place.
Next, just replace your coolant. Now, replace your radiator cap and start your car for a while. Then, turn it off. Open up your reservoir bottle and then fill your reservoir about halfway up. Then, drive your vehicle just a little bit. Check the coolant often and fill it to the proper level.
