Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the serpentine belt on this 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. The items you'll need for this are a 15 and 17mm socket and ratchet, a T25 Torx bit, a flat blade screwdriver, a torque wrench, and jack and jack stands.

Now using your pick, remove these caps. For one of these lug nuts, you're going to have to use a key. The key can be found in your trunk with the spare tire. It just inserts into that special lug nut and then removes the same as the other lug nuts using a 17mm socket. If you have air-powered tools, you can raise your vehicle then remove the lug nuts. If you don't, loosen the lug nuts while the vehicle is on the ground. Then raise and support the vehicle and remove them the rest of the way. Your wheel will pull free.

Next, you want to remove this panel. It's held in with a series of T25 screws. There's also a few of them down here. We'll just fast-forward as Mike removes those. Now you can pull this panel down. Pull down the front first and then it slides out.

Now, using a 15mm socket and ratchet, just put it on the tensioner and pull back. Pull the belt off this front pulley. Then release the tensioner and pull the belt off this pulley. Now up here is the tensioner for your serpentine belt. Just pull back on the tensioner and pull the belt off your A/C pulley and then just reach up and work the belt off the other pulleys. Just tuck it around the ratchet and pull the belt down there.

Right here is your serpentine belt diagram. Just refer to this as you're putting the belt back on. Feed your serpentine belt back up and around the idler pulley and over the alternator pulley. Just wrap the bottom of the belt on to the A/C pulley. Now up here, you want to just make sure you tuck it around that idler. Again, refer to the belt diagram if you need to. For right now, you're just trying to get it on all the pulleys except that back one. Now, to get it on that back pulley which is your water pump pulley you want to just pull back on the tensioner and then with your other hand just keep feeding the belt back. Just keep feeding it onto that pulley, turning the pulley a little bit to help pull it on. Now you can release the tensioner and pull the ratchet off of it. Then, just turn the pulleys making sure the belt is on properly and all the pulleys spin. Put your ratchet back on the tensioner. Tuck the belt onto that larger pulley. Pull the tensioner back and put it onto the front pulley. Release the tensioner and then just replace that panel and all of the screws. Tighten them up.

Now replace your wheel and you'll realize here that lug nuts are a bit easier than lug bolts. But, you just have to try and hold the wheel in place while you put the lug bolt through. I hate these things. You want to just balance it on the hub and eventually the bolt will line up and push in. Then you just want to tighten those up preliminarily. Replace and tighten up each of those then lower the vehicle and tighten them up the rest of the way. Now torque each of these to 100 foot-pounds in a crossing pattern. Replace your lug nut caps.
