In this video we'll be showing you how to replace an air cleaner in this 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. A similar procedure for any '95 to '05 Sunfire or Cavalier. The first thing we're going to do is open the hood. We're going to reach under and there's a little lever here that you pull up on and pull up your prop rod. Now your air filter is located right here in this box. Generally on a car you can see a tube going into the engine. That's where you're going to find the air filter. Unless you have an older car the air filter is usually right on top of the engine. We're just going to remove four screws with a regular Phillip's screwdriver. This right here is your filter. It just comes right up and out. Here's the air filter out of it. You can see it's pretty gray, pretty dirty. Definitely time for a change.
Air filter is what your car breathes through, so any time you make it easier for your engine to breathe, you're going to increase the power slightly which is going to improve your gas mileage slightly. Going to a K and P style performance air filter. It does offer some value over the life of your car. It's going to give you slightly more power. You're not going to be able to feel it as far as the power gain unless you have a high performance vehicle that really can't breathe through a paper air filter, it has to breathe through a K and N or breathe straight through. It's going to give you a slight power increase which is going to give you a slight mile per gallon increase. Over the life of your vehicle the K and N filter will pay itself back by the fact that it gives you slight mile per gallon increase and you can wash it and put it back in yearly. You don't have to buy another one basically. That's that. We're going to put a new filter in the Sunfire and get it going. Lift the housing back up. Make sure you put it right down in there and it's in there correctly. Push the housing down and start the screws. Tighten up the screws. I make sure I start them all. Make sure I've got them in before I tighten any of them up. Then you want to tighten them so they're snug, but not overly tight. Then the last step is if you decide to go with a K and N filter make sure you put a sticker on your air box somewhere to call out that you have a K and N filter, if somebody is servicing your car, they don't accidentally throw away your filter on you.
