How To Do An Oil Change 2003-07 Cadillac CTS 2-8L VVT V6

Your oil drain plug is kind of right in behind your front wheel. If you need to lift up the car, there's a little arrow. You want to put a jack right underneath that arrow and then put a jack stand underneath just to protect yourself. Then the drain is located right there. Use a 13 millimeter wrench. Make sure you have an oil pan underneath and I use another wrench for some extra leverage. You could also use a socket and ratchet with a bigger ratchet but if you only had wrenches, you could use that method. Then make sure, again, you have the pan underneath and drain out the oil. About six quarts is going to come out. Once it's done draining, put your plug back in and then tighten it back up with the wrench. Make sure you wipe down any drips so you can just inspect and make sure it's not leaking later.

Now you want to open the hood, pull the hood release lever and then there's a safety latch. You move it over to the side and lift the hood up. Your oil filter is a cartridge style and it's right here. It's a 24 millimeter bolt head so I have a 24 millimeter socket with a ratchet and extension. Remove it and usually let it drip out. I did it kind of quicker but you let it drip out or have your drip pan right there to catch the oil.

Just pull the oil filter out. It may stay also in with the vehicle, so you pull it out of the vehicle. You want to swap the O-ring, so I use a little pick to pull the O-ring out of it's channel there, and pull it off the top of the oil filter canister. Then I take my new O-ring. Put it around the top, and then as you push it down in the groove you want to make sure you don't twist it up a lot. There's enough oil left on there that you'll get a little bit of oil on it that you need for it to seal. Like I said, just make sure it doesn't twist around and if does just pull on it a little bit and get it to seat correctly. Then put the new filter right in. Carefully put the filter back down in. Make sure it seats in correctly. Push it down and turn it clockwise to start it, until you get it seated. Then you want to tighten to 18 foot-pounds or 25 newton-meters.

Now you'll want to check or you're going to want to fill the oil. I take the oil dipstick out. Just wipe the old oil off of it. You can see that on the dipstick there's a little set of crosshatches. It's a little bit hard to see with the camera but the crosshatches denote where the acceptable level is when you fill it.

Remove the cap and and this engine takes . this is a 2.8 liter. It takes six quarts of oil. You see we're just going to pour the oil in and we'll repeat this five more times. We'll just put five quarts in to start with and whenever you're finished putting oil in, put the cap back on. Now I'm going to check the oil, so make sure the dipstick is clean. Put it down in. Hold it in for a few seconds and then remove it. You should be able to see that the oil is about halfway up through the crosshatch section. It's okay for right now. We put the dipstick back in.

Now we're going to start the vehicle up, let it circulate. It also will fill the oil filter and you want to make sure that the oil light goes off. The oil light is over on the left side. It looks like a little oil can. See it's on the far left there. It goes off. We'll let the car run for a few seconds. Check the oil. Pull the dipstick out. Wipe it off. Make sure you got the oil off of it. Then reinsert it. Hold it in for a second or two.

Then you should be able to see that the oil is actually down below the crosshatches, so we'll need to add another quart of oil. We'll kind of speed up as I do that. Again, whenever you're done adding oil each time get in a good habit of putting the cap back on. Again, wipe down the dipstick and recheck it. With that sixth quart of oil it's now at the appropriate level. Just below the top of the crosshatches. We'll reinstall the dipstick and the engine's ready to go.

You'll want to reset your engine oil monitor. Hit the clear button and then the up button a few times to get to your engine oil light monitor. See it's at zero. Hold the clear button in and it will reset to 100%.
