Window switches triggering the wrong functions? This video will show how to fix a common problem on these Explorers and Mountaineers

step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Turn off the courtesy light
- Pry off the door handle bezel with a flat blade screwdriver
- Slide the bezel off over the door handle
- Pry up the window switch panel by hand
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Remove the 7mm bolt behind the switch panel
- Remove the two 7mm bolts from the bottom of the door panel
- Pry off the mirror switch with a flat blade screwdriver
- Disconnect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the door lock wiring harness
- Remove four 6mm screws from the speaker
- Disconnect the speaker wiring lead
- Pull off the speaker

step 2 :Repairing the Wires
- Pull on the harness boot in between the door to remove it
- Pull the wire boot through the door to access the wires
- Strip off the end of the wire with wire cutters
- Repeat the process on the other end of the wire
- Feed the wire into the butt splice
- Pinch the butt splice on the end of the wire
- Pinch the splice on the other wire
- Repeat the process as necessary

step 3 :Testing the Wires
- Plug in the switch panel wiring harnesses to test the appropriate wires
- Push the wire boot back through the door

step 4 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Put the speaker into place
- Insert the four 6mm bolts into the speaker
- Connect the speaker wiring lead
- Connect the door lock wiring harness
- Lift the door panel into place
- Insert the two 7mm bolts into the bottom of the door panel
- Insert the 7mm bolt behind the switch panel
- Connect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Push the mirror switch into place
- Connect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Push the switch panel into place
- Slide the door handle bezel over the door handle
- Push on the door handle bezel

In this video, our 2003 Mercury Mountaineer has a couple of issues. The right hand window goes up, but not down, the power door lock's not working, and the memory function is not working correctly, so we'll show you a common problem with these Mountaineers and Explorers. What you'll need to fix that problem is a 6mm and 7mm socket and ratchet, flat blade screwdriver, wiring pliers that include a crimping function, and butt splice tubes.
You want to make sure your courtesy lights don't stay on so you don't drain your battery. Just make sure you turn those off. Pry out from the bottom of this panel with a flat blade screwdriver, and then just slide the panel towards the front of the vehicle and off the door handle. Then lift up on the front of your switch panel and slide it forward and up. Then just push the tabs on these harnesses and disconnect them. For this last one you're going to want to use a flat blade screwdriver and just push in on the tab, pull it free, and your switch panel is free.
Now you want to remove this 7mm bolt and these two 7mm bolts right here. We'll just fast-forward as Mike does that. Pry out this switch. Then just pry out the tab on the harness, disconnect the harness, and just feed that back through the door panel. Lift the door panel up, then pull it back, and then just push the tab on this harness to disconnect it and your door panel is free.
Now remove the four 6mm bolts that hold in the speaker. Push the tab on the harness and disconnect it. Now your speaker is free.
On our Mercury Mountaineer here, we had weird thing where the passenger side window would go up but not down when you pressed the button. You hear a little click of the window trying to go up, but it wouldn't go down. Also, none of the memory stuff was working. If you have stuff inside the vehicle that doesn't seem to be working right, what you want to do is come in here and pull on this harness boot, just pull it right out. You need to be pretty forceful with it. Just grab a hold of it, and it's interesting as I'm pulling it you can see there's a broken wire, there's a broken wire back there and a broken wire here.
We took our door panel off and sure enough, as we pulled that back, this end, right basically where the wires go through the door, they're all broken off. We'll show you how to fix those up. If you look right in there, let's see if I can find some of the wires here. If you push this through into the door and then pull this boot right down, push it through the door, pull it back, you can start seeing there's one of the broken wires and more broken wires. Basically, we have to reconnect all these wires. Pull the wire through and, using a pair of wire strippers, just strip off the end of the wire. Then repeat the process on the other end of the wire.
Take your butt splice and feed the wire in. Then you just pinch it onto the wire. Just repeat the process on this end. You can see he's just reaching up through the door feeding the wire into the splice.
For the smaller wires, you may need to do it through this side of the door. Then, once you've got the tube on one wire, just feed it through the door and push the other wire into place. Then just pinch it onto that end. You just want to repeat this process with all of the other broken wires.
Alright, I'm just going to turn the key on. So we had three problems: they are none of the memory stuff was working, our right hand window, the motor would make a noise when you went up but it wouldn't go down, and also our locks weren't working correctly. You would get an unlock but no lock, and now the locks are working. The window goes up and down.
Then let's see the memory switch. You can see when I hit the switch the seat moves. Those wires fixed our problem. Pull this cover back through the door and to get it to reseat on this side. You just want to push it through and then pull it back. Once you've got it in place on this side, just do the same thing on the other side.
Reconnect your speaker and push it back into place. Then replace those four 6mm bolts and just tighten them up.
To replace your door panel, just reconnect this harness and make sure you push the harness for your mirror switch through. Then push the door panel into place and slide it down. We'll fast-forward as Mike replaces those three 7mm bolts and tightens them up. Reconnect this switch and push it back into place. Then reconnect your switch panel and slide the back in first and then push the front end down. Then slide this panel back over the door handle and push those tabs back into place and then push in the front. You're all set.
