Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. We've been selling auto parts for over 30 years.
What's up, guys? I'm Andy from 1A Auto. In this video, I'm going to show you how to check the fluid level in the transfer case on this 2012 Ford Escape. If you need parts for your vehicle, click the link in the description and head over to 1aauto.com.
Over here underneath the vehicle, right next to your transmission is the transfer case. This transfers power to the rear of the vehicle, and there's fluid in there. You're going to want to check it once in a while. You don't have to check this every oil change. Generally, if it's not leaking out, you shouldn't need to check it, but it's still always good to check once in a while.
We're going to use a 3/8 ratchet and go right here. There's a fill plug. Loosen this up, and if you saw this leaking, then you definitely want to check it and top it off just to get by for a little while before you can fix the seals. Pull the fill plug out. There's a little bit of metal on there, which is okay. It's not excessive. If there was big chunks, then that would not be good. So I'll just wipe that off with a rag. Then we can just take our finger just to check the level. You want the level right up to the bottom of the fill right there, and it looks like it's right there. Fluid looks a little bit dirty. It would be a good idea to change this once in a while. You're going to want to check your owner's manual for what kind of fluid it takes.
Reinstall the fill plug. I'm going to put some pipe sealer on the fill plug and get this started. I'll take the ratchet. I'll tighten this up and this, this plug, it's not going to tighten down to the point of stopping. It's just going to get tighter and tighter. You just want to snug it down a little bit, not too tight, because you don't want to crack the case but just to the point where it feels pretty good and not too tight. Take a little brake parts cleaner and clean off that area, wipe it with a rag, and you're good to go.
