How to Check Rear Differential Fluid 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Hey, friends. It's Len here at 1A Auto. Today I'm going to be working on our 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 and I want to show you something very basic, checking the rear differential fluid. It's going to be super easy. I can do it and you can do it too. As always, if you need any parts, you can check us out at 1AAuto.com.

Here we go. You're going to come right over here and get yourself a little rubber plug. That's the rear differential cover, okay? There's no drain or anything like that on it to service that you would take off this cover.

To check it, you're just going to go right like this with a little screwdriver. Just go like this around it. It kind of gets off some of the crud that's around there. Take your screwdriver going like that til it stops. Then go in this direction. You should be able to pry it and pop this right out. Here we are. Here's your cover. It's just rubber. A lot of times what happens with these, when they get old they get super hard and firm. This one's actually in really good condition, surprisingly. We'll set this aside.

To check the differential level you just take a gloved finger, go inside the hole, give it a little twist down and see if you can get any fluid on your finger. I did. That means the fluid level's perfect. Judging by the color of this fluid, it looks as though it could use a fluid service, though. That will be a project for another day. If you want to see it, put it in the comment section. For the purpose of this video, we're just showing you how to check it. Now that we know the fluid's full, we're going to take our plug. Push it right in here. Give it a loving bock. Wipe it down, and down the road you go. Easy peasy.
