In this video we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 L V6. We're going to show you how to change the engine oil and filter. You should be doing this just about every 3500 miles in this truck. This process is going to be the same for just about any other 4 L V6 Ford vehicle, from the Explorers to the Rangers and so on. Remove your oil cap. We're doing this job on a lift to make it easier to show you what's going on, but this can easily be done on a jack and jack stands and depending on the height of your truck you may even be able to do it without raising the vehicle. Your oil pan is located here, with the drain plug over on the passenger side. Remove this with a 13 millimeter socket and ratchet. Be sure you have a drain bucket set up under the vehicle before removing the drain plug. Allow the oil to completely drain.

The oil filter is located up here. Sometimes you can remove these by hand otherwise you'll need a pair of filter claws or a strap wrench. We'll loosen that up. Try to keep it nice and upright when we remove it so we don't spill oil everywhere. Carefully place it in the drain bucket. Allow it to drain and ensure that the old gasket is still on the oil filter. If it gets stuck up on the filter housing and you put the new filter on you get what's called a double gasket which actually creates a pretty serious oil leak and you can drain out all the oil you just changed in just a matter of moments and potentially damage your engine. If the old oil filter gasket is still on the housing remove it by hand or with a pick or razor blade and make sure that the surface is clear of debris before installing your new filter.

Take some nice clean oil on the tip of your finger, lubricate the gasket for the oil filter. Spin that back on. Get it as tight as you can by hand. Reinstall the drain plug. Torque the drain plug to 18 foot-pounds.

Place the funnel into your oil fill neck. This particular engine takes 5 quarts of 5W 30 motor oil. Remove the oil funnel. Reinstall your oil cap and check the oil in the vehicle.

Remove the engine oil dipstick. Wipe it clean. With a clean paper towel or rag. Be sure that the truck is parked on a level service for the most accurate reading. Reinstall the dipstick fully and remove it again. We're simply checking that there is fluid on the dipstick up to this dot here. These two dots signify the last quart of oil for the proper capacity inside of the oil pan. If the line of fluid is lower than this top mark, this mark signifies that it is one quart low. The middle would be a half quart low and if it is below the dipstick we'll add a quart at a time until we get back up into our range and fine tune from there. Our fluid is up top where it should be. Clean off your dipstick. Reinstall it into the dipstick tube. If your fluid level was below that line, top it off, recheck, and top off as needed until it's within an acceptable range.
