In this video, we're going to be working with our 2001 Chevy Camaro 3.6 liter V6. We're going to show you how to perform an oil change on your vehicle's engine.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: 15mm and 24mm sockets, ratchet, drain pan, jack, jack stands, torque wrench, paper towels, pick, funnel, oil filter
Remove your oil cap, and I like to place them upside down over by the hood latch so if you were to try to close your hood without remembering to put your oil cap back on, your hood won't close and it's a quick reminder to not forget a very important step.
Raise and support your vehicle. We're using the lift to make it easier to show you what's going on, but this can easily be done at home with a jack and jack stands. Using a 15mm socket and ratchet, loosen your oil drain plug bolt. Make sure you have a drain bucket under your vehicle, and this is on the passenger side of the oil pan. We'll go ahead and spin that out by hand. We place our drain plug somewhere clean and dry while we let our fluid run out. Reinstall your drain plug and if you're not sure of how to just tighten one by hand, it's always safe to torque it in this case we'll go to 18 foot-pounds. You can see that's really not a lot. Over-torquing these can be very bad, especially where we have an aluminum drain pan here, because that can cause the threads inside to strip out and this can either leak, or if stripped out bad enough, those will actually vibrate out and drain all your oil and it could cost you an engine. Make sure you wipe up any excess oil.
Lift up and remove your engine cover. We'll use a 24mm socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the oil filter housing cover here. We'll then remove the cap and our oil filter, toss these in our drain bucket.
Install your new oil filter using a pick. Remove the old o-ring, and install the new one, which is usually included with your filter. We'll then reinstall the oil filter housing cap. We'll then torque the cap to 18 foot-pounds and reinstall our engine cover.
Place a funnel into your filler neck, and fill the engine with six quarts of your favorite motor oil. When you're done filling your oil, remove your funnel and reinstall your cap.
To reset the service light in your Camaro, simply turn the key to the run position, which is the last key click before you would actually crank the engine. Put the gas pedal fully to the floor three times and let go. Shut the key off and turn it back on, and make sure that your service oil light doesn't come back on.
Start your vehicle and allow it to run until the oil pressure kicks up. We'll then shut the vehicle off and give it a moment for the oil to drain back down into the engine oil pan. Remove your oil dip stick, wipe it off, reinstall it fully, take it out, and check the oil level.
Now ours looks like it's down about a half a quart. These hash marks here indicate one quart in the middle. Now it's not uncommon for the vehicle to maybe take a little more or a little less oil than as exactly specified, especially when ours has been sitting for a while and has some leaks. It’s possible it lost a little oil where it expects there to be some floating around the engine when you do the change, so we'll have to top that off a little bit and check it again.
