Grinding Noise When Braking Whats That Noise in My Car Truck or SUV

Created on: 2020-02-27

This video shows you how to diagnose grinding brake noises.

Does your car sound like that? That's what we're gonna talk about in this video.

So that noise was pretty obvious where it was coming from, but if you don't know where it's coming from, go to the wheels, take a look inside, see if you can see the rotor. This rotor obviously is scored pretty bad right there and there. So this is the wheel we heard the noise from. So let's pull the wheel off and investigate.

All right, so this is the outboard pad and it looks like all the pad material is gone. It's just metal on metal. Now, you gotta be careful because this could be on the inboard side and you might not be able to see it from the outside. Pull the pads off. Now, if I look at these pads, they're definitely worn unevenly. So something was going on here. The fact that this was the outside pad leads me to believe that there was something sticking in the slides. The pad slides were sticking. If it was more the inside, I would be more worried about the caliper piston being stuck. I'm gonna check if this caliper piston is ripped at all. Check around the edge of the dust seal and it looks pretty good on this one. It's a little bit dirty but that's okay. Take some groove-jaw pliers and just compress the caliper. And this moves actually really easily. So there's nothing wrong with this caliper. It just happens to be the pad was sticking in the caliper bracket. So if your caliper piston is sticking, you are gonna need to replace the caliper.

Now if they were all worn evenly, they were all really thin like this, then it was...probably had nothing to do with the bracket or the caliper. It's probably your brakes wore out and you needed to change them. Most of the time, your brake pads will have a warning indicator, which is also called a squealer and it'll make a squeaking noise. Then you'll hear that before you get to this point. But this one, it has broken off. So if that was broken off or your vehicle doesn't have those, it can get down to metal to metal like this. And you definitely wanna change these.

Whenever you have this condition where the brake pads are metal on metal, it's extremely dangerous. You wanna change these right away. So we're gonna put some brakes on this car.
