Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks!
In this video, we're going to show you how to change your rear differential fluid on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. The items you'll need for this are a 3/4" ratchet, a 3/8" ratchet, a drip pan, a piece of hose, and some RTV.
Your rear differential is located right here. Using a 3/4" ratchet just remove this drain plug, and you may need a piece of pipe for some extra leverage. We'll fast-forward as he removes that the rest of the way. Make sure you have a drip pan underneath it. Once it stops draining, put some RTV around the drain plug. Just wipe it into the threads and then twist your drain plug back into place and tighten it up.
Using a 3/8" ratchet, just remove the filler plug up here. I'll take a piece of hose, put it right in. This allows us to just take our fluid, tip it up and squirt it in. Once you get some dripping out of there pretty good. We'll fast-forward as Mike tightens that up. Then just wipe down the area and you're all set.
