Okay, so part one of two, replacing the multi-function switch on this 1999 Suburban, same as any 1995 to 1998 truck as well as 1999 to 2000 heavy trucks and 1995 to 1999 SUV. The tools you need are pretty basic, an 8-mm or 5/16 wrench to disconnect the battery, flat blade screwdriver, steering wheel puller. That is the one special tool you will need. Some millimeter sockets and ratchet and a T25 Torx bit and also something to cut some wire ties.
Disconnect your battery. You can see we've disconnected the positive battery cable here. That's an 8-mm or a 5/16 wrench. You want to disable the airbag by pulling the fuse, which on this truck it's #10, airbag, so you want to use your puller here and then pull out the #10 fuse. Okay, just a regular screw driver and there's slots right in behind if you feel with your finger. You just put the screwdriver into the slot. I just kind of work it a little bit and jiggle it. You can see the airbag comes up. Then inside there's the slot. Then your airbag comes off. You unplug the airbag. You pull this little locking tab out and just pull like that and your airbag is out.
Next, is your horn wires, which is this button here and just kind of twist it and pull on it and it comes out. So I'm removing this bolt. It's a 21-mm bolt. Now I'm going to put on a steering wheel puller. This is probably the one special tool you'll need in this project and it's usually a pretty inexpensive tool to buy. Okay so here I'm just threading in the bolts for the steering wheel puller. Then I'll grab my -I'm going to tighten them up a little bit, and then grab my 7 or 5/8 wrench and you will see me pull the steering wheel off. This is the best way to get the steering wheel off obviously.
Now you want to remove this lower panel and you have to remove four 7-mm screws, one here, one here, here, and then right under the parking brake release. After you remove those seven, you just kind of pull on it firmly and it does have some clips that hold it in. So let's disconnect this air hose here. It just pulls off. That goes down the other way enough. There are two T25 Torx screws; one is to the left of center of the column, one's right in the center. There are two holes on the one that is further away. Tilt the level will just pull right out, okay. It's just kind of pushed in. That comes down and now you need a 4-mm socket. There's a 4-mm bolt here and then if you go just up to the right you can look up in there and there is a 4-mm bolt right up in here and that allows this to come up enough. I'm going to switch to a T25 Torx bit again. There's a bolt right here that comes off that holds the switch to the column. Then this is a little tricky. I'm going to take this bit. I've got 1/4 inch wrench here. I'm going to use it like this and push it down into the screw. There's a screw on top here and it holds that switch on. You push it down in. Okay and here I have a ratcheting wrench but obviously you can just use a regular 1/4-inch wrench. Then you can reach in there and undo it with your hand. That way what you are going to want to do is remove this plate down here which is four 10-mm screws, one, two, three, and four.
Once you've got that plate off, then you want to pull this little piece of duct out of here. You are going to want to remove this red screw here and then this black screw over here that holds the connector in. Those are both 7-mm. You're also going to want to cut any of these wire ties that are tying that harness together. Okay so now once you have your connector down here what you want to do is just put your screwdriver into them and then the connectors for the multi-function switch actually slide forward and out.
Now we need to unplug the cruise control and it's this little clip right here. It's plugged in there kind of like this and then this locking tab is pushed in from the back side to lock it. So you have to pull this locking tab out first and then press and pull that out. Now that I have everything unplugged, there's kind of this conduit here that I can just pull apart like a big piece of electrical tape. I can carefully pull it apart. There's my old switch removed.
So here we are. Here's our original switch, our new switch from 1AAuto, obviously, it's got this little mesh on here. You see everything is the same. It's going to bolt up all the same. One thing they did try and do is you can see on our original here it would appear that you have a bigger harness for that brake switch. Actually I'm just going to pull it out and you can see we've got plenty of harness on the new switch.

Part two of two, replacing the multi-function switch on this '99 Suburban, same as basically, any '95 to 2000 truck or heavy duty truck and '95 to '99 SUV. We'll be covering the installation. If you want to see the removal, just check out other videos. A quick look at the tools you'll need, various millimeter wrenches, flat blade screwdriver and a Torx bit.
Okay. Here we are. Here's our original switch, a new switch from 1A Auto. Obviously, it's got this little mesh on here. You see everything is the same, it's going to bolt up all the same. One thing, they did try and do is you can see on our original here, it would appear that you had a bigger harness for that break switch. Actually, I'm just going to pull it out and you can see we got plenty of harness on this switch. I'm going to feed the switch down through. I'm going to actually, roughly bolt this on first, just so I have it right, make sure I have stuff on the right place. Start my upper screw and start my lower screw. I'm going to take my harness, I'm going to feed it along with the other one and see if I can get this conduit back to where it should be. This control wire, you try to find a place. Harness and push in. Got on the other side, take it, push it in so that's all together now.
It's always good to try and put things back together the way they came apart because the factory hasn't had an idea what they were doing, keep were rubbing together, wires were getting chafed or whatever. I'll take my cruise control wire and I'm going to go in front of this. Pull this bar here, push it over. Grab hold of it on the other side of the cone, like push and pull harness stuff and over. Plug in. I have my lock and I'm going to reach up in behind and before I take care of this, I'll video it. Put into place. Now, up underneath here, I'm going to try to take my connector. I'm just kind of working my connector right in to the other end. Now, I'll tighten up that bolt and then bolt it back on to the bracket.
I've bolted my connector back in and I bolted the connector on to the bracket to keep it steady. We've connected the battery and what I'm going to do is do a quick test here, first is the emergency lights. How is it been working. Let me see how this works, the way it works. The watches are working. Okay. High beam. Okay. The one thing I can't really test is the cruise control. First, I'm going to take a couple wire ties and kind of restore this back to the way it was, all wired tied together. This tube up in here first. Make sure that's on well. A 10mm screw, make sure this one goes up into the right spot. The bottom, it kind of goes in and there's two hooks. One of them broken off on this. You kind of go in and make sure it hooks underneath, and make sure the shifts are bolted on there, correctly. That two T25 screws from the bottom here.
I'm going to take this, connects at a dock and then you got basically little pin here that go into slots. A four 7mm screws. Before we put the steering on, we're just going to put the tilt lever back in, pushes right in like that. There's a really small mark, I'm not sure you can see it or not, on the steering column, because you want to line up that arrow with the mark to get wheel straight. It's a whole lot easier to take it off, you just bolt it on, 21mm socket. Take your horn button and you have a little clips on it. Basically, just want to push it in and get it to stay. Now, your airbag, easy enough, clip it on, lock it. Before we connect the battery, we put the fuse back in for the airbag. Put the panel back on. There you go. Now, we'll connect the battery, make sure the horn works. Take it for a test drive, make sure the cruise works and everything is all set.

Let's remove the negative battery terminal using an eight-millimeter wrench, set this aside so we cannot contact that battery terminal. So next we're just going to turn the steering wheel. We're going to have this so it's just like that. At this point, if you were to look at the backside, you're going to see two holes, and inside those holes, there's going to be a little piton, there you're going to want to push on. So, I just take my pick. I'm going to push right in the center, and I'm going to pull out on the airbag a little bit. And I'll do the same to the other one. Okay. It came out. And then, I'll do the other side real quick again just in case. Okay. That feels good. We'll do the same to the lower ones. There we go. Carefully pull this away. Now, we're going to disconnect the airbag. This orange thing right here is a lock. First, I'll slide it out where it's held in. And we're just going to grab that orange piece, pull that out. Now, we'll just press it on this tab and we should be able to separate these two pieces. Carefully set your bag aside. Get that wire out of the way. Now, we're going to remove this nut.
Now, the next thing you want to do is pay special attention to make sure that your steering shaft is marked and the steering wheel area is marked. So they line up. If they aren't, just go ahead and make some sort of mark that'll make it so you can remember, because you don't want to put your steering wheel on crisscross. At this point, usually, you can strike it around. And sometimes it comes off that easy. Other times, what you might have to do is put a bolt through right there and there and just kind of keep driving them in and it'll press up against this area there, and draw the steering wheel away. So now we're going to use a T25. It's a torques bit driver. And if you were to look underneath your steering column, you're going to see two large holes. There's going to be two screws, remove both of them. The next thing you're going to have to remove is this right here. To do that, just pull it straight out. And we can grab onto this. You want to push towards the dash to unhook the clips there in the back. And then, of course, draw towards you to remove it completely. There's those hooks that I was talking about.
Next, we're going to use an inverted torques E5. We're going to loosen this right here, and that's going to relieve this upper plastic. You should be able to lift up, okay. That came pretty nice. It's coming along great. Awesome. But we're going to have to do it next is we're going to be coming from underneath this plastic. We're going to find a little hole and I'll show you in a second. We're going to take this pick and we're going to press down. Once you press this down, you can turn it backwards a little bit and slide the unit out. So right now my plastics already off. And that's just basically for the camera. But essentially you just lift it up so you can get under. Now, just kind of get it out of the way. And then, here's that hole that I was talking about. So imagine I'm lifting up that plastic. I find my hole. Okay? I'm going to take my ignition. I'm going to turn it so it's in the cranked position and that's lining this slot up with the hole. I'm going to press down. And then, I'm going to turn this counterclockwise. And then, I'm going to turn this back a little bit and pull this out. Let's try again. Crank it, push this in, twist, and pull. So now, you should be able to get this plastic cover right out of the way. We'll set that aside.
Now, if you were to look right up along the top here, you're going to see a T25 screw. And then, also if you were to look from the steering wheel side, straight in, you're going to see another T25 right there. We're going to remove both of those. Set that aside. We'll grab onto this, lift it up. Now, we're going to have the electrical wires that we're going to disconnect. We'll just spin it around so we can take a look. So now we're just going to grab on this yellow wire right here. This is the one for the airbag and pull this down, just hold on by a push clip. Remove the lock, press that tab, and separate the two. Now, we're going to move along to this unit right here.
So now, right near those wires, you're going to see a little bolt that holds this unit to a bracket. Use a seven-millimeter with an extension and remove it. There it is. Lift up on this, and then we can pull it down a little bit. Let's see. It's going to get it off that upper bracket. Awesome. So now if you look right inside here, let's see if I can move these wires. You can see there's a little screw. We're going to unscrew that screw. There we are. So now you're going to notice that you have a couple other ground wires that run up along the top. We'll take a better look at those. Now, we're going to remove this panel right here. You're going to see four, seven-millimeter screws, remove them. Let's go ahead and pull this off of here. Okay. This hose right here just pops right off. And now, we'll just kind of hang this off to the side.
So now I'm going to use this nice curved pick. And this outer portion of the wires right there and then this gray portion, outer portion of the wire of the pieces that we need. To get those out, they actually pulled down and away from the rest of the wiring harness. But there's going to be a couple little clips, so that's the reason why I'm going to use this. I go right in between this gap right there. Give it a little twist, and then pull down. And that separates. Do the same to the other one. That's great. Now, if you have a wire tie that's holding everything together, obviously, you're going to want to trim that off. And then, once you've done that, we'll draw this out. So now, we'll just carefully pull this out of here. Looks like I've got a little bit of electrical tape holding some stuff together so I'll just get that off there real quick. All right, so there's a little green clip that's holding these two wires to this right here. So once you get the locking clip out, we're going to push on the tab and then draw the wires. Now, if you follow those two wires it goes right to this unit right there. We're just going to push on this little tab and then twist. Try again. And it comes right out.
Now, we can grab this and remove the multifunction switch. Let's get ready for an install. We double-check to make sure we have the same connectors which is very important. This looks great. Here we go. Take those wires, go right along the driver side of the steering column there. And then, just bring it all the way down and let it hang down at the bottom. We'll deal with that in a minute. So now, if you look at your wiring harnesses, we have the big one and then, we have of course the two that we brought down there. The gray is going to go next to the side that has the yellow wire on it. Take your gray unit. Just kind of bring it right up along and then through the groove and listen for a click. There it is. Give it a nice push. Make sure it's locked in. Do the same thing to the black except on the other side. Make sure those wires aren't getting pinched. Slide that black one up in there. It should lock right in. That feels great. Okay. This looks good. Let's move along.
Get those wires up and over the steering column. There we go. Back connector up, give it a nice tug. That feels great. So we'll just lift this up, slide it into its little bracket. And then, of course, pull it down so the whole lines up. Okay. Once you have everything lined up, go ahead and put in your little screw. Okay. It's nice and tight, give it a wiggle. That feels perfect. Let's reconnect this back in. And then, of course, make sure you put your lock. Awesome. Make sure you resecure it. And then, of course, tuck the wires up so there's no way they can get caught on anything. Make sure you put your lock back in. I can reach it. Let's get this plastic back on here. Make sure you connect in your vent hose, super important. Just line everything up, a couple loving bonks. Just get it situated. And now, we'll use our four screws and mounted it in securely. So let's mount this in now. It should just slide right in. We've got our top hole. Make sure you start both screws in before you tighten either of them down. This one is a little harder to get to. Okay. That's nice and snug. Do this one as well. Perfect. It doesn't move around. It's nice and secure. Let's get this cover on there. Let's bring it down and under. Pay attention to this rubber right there. See if we can get it to sit in the groove. Let's slide this down over this. Okay. This is looking pretty good.
Let's get the ignition cylinder in. Give it a nice tug, make sure it does not come out. Perfect. Hold that down. I'm just going to screw this in. Remember, you're just screwing into plastic, so you don't necessarily want to go too tight, just bottom it out. And then, give it a wiggle. That feels great. Now, it's time to get the lower part on. Remember those hooks. When we go in, we need to go an extra far, bring it up and then slide it forward and lock it in. So it could come off on the outside of that. Going extra far like I said, bring it up. And then...oh, come on. There it is. Lock those in. All right. Let's put in our screws. Now, we're going to put this up. Give it a nice push, make sure it functions perfectly. Now, it's going to be time to get the steering wheel back on here. You just want to pay attention to this yellow wire. We're going to put it right through this slot in the steering wheel. Draw it right on through. Then we're going to line up the steering wheel. As you push and twist you'll notice it'll finally set in and everything should line up with the marks that are already on there. If you don't have it lined up, it just really won't push in until it does.
So, we'll just kind of give it a nice little push. That feels good. Now, we're going to use our 21-millimeter nut. We'll snug it up and then we'll torque it to 29-foot pounds. Let's torque this to 29-foot pounds. Perfect. Let's get this wire right here. Now, we've got our airbag. I want to make sure you connect it in, and then we have the orange lock. Heard the click, give it a nice tug. Take your lock, slide it right in. You want to make sure that this is secured up and over the top of that, slide just like that. And we're going to take these. You want your four prongs to line up with your four holes. Before we go any further, just double-check to make sure that you have this inside there. This is for the horn. And if you don't have it in there, it's not going to work. Carefully line those up. Okay. Now, I'm just going to push it in. Awesome.
So now, we'll carefully connect our negative battery terminal here. Check it make sure it's nice and snug. Now, let's go try to start the vehicle. So let's test it. Test that four way. Awesome. Four way is good. Left. Right, and of course turn on the headlights, high beam. I can see that they're turning on and off right there. That's great. One last thing, horn. Perfect.
