BHA54181 Axle / Spindle Nut Torque Specification

  1. step : Removing the Wheel (1:08)
    • Loosen the Lug Nuts
    • Raise the vehicle with a jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Slide off the wheel
  2. step : Removing the Brakes (1:36)
    • Using a pry bar, pull the brake caliper forward to reset the piston
    • Remove the 10mm sockets from the brake caliper
    • Pull off the brake caliper
    • Pull off the brake rotor
  3. step : Adjusting the Emergency Brake (3:01)
    • If the rotor does not remove easily, adjust the emergency brakes
    • Remove the rubber plug in the back with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Use a brake spoon to turn the adjuster wheel down
  4. step : Removing the Hub (4:08)
    • Using a hammer and chisel, remove the dust cover
    • Break the cotter pin with the slip joint pliers
    • Use a 36mm socket with a breaker bar and a pipe to loosen the nut
    • Remove the nut
    • Pull off the hub
  5. step : Installing the New Hub (5:35)
    • Remove rust with paper towel or wire brush
    • Apply lubricant if necessary
    • Slide on the new hub
    • Secure the hub in place with a block of wood and a hammer
    • Reattach the nut and tighten it with the breaker bar
    • Tighten the nut to 124 foot-pounds with the torque wrench
    • Attach the spring washer and insert the cotter pin
    • Secure the cotter pin using the pliers
    • Reattach the dust cover using the hammer
  6. step : Reinstalling the Brake Rotor (8:24)
    • Slide on the brake rotor
    • Use the brake spoon to adjust the emergency brake
    • There should be even friction all around from the emergency brake shoes
    • Replace the rubber plug
  7. step : Reinstalling the Brake Caliper and Pads (8:54)
    • Reattach the pads to the caliper
    • Push back the caliper slides
    • Put the caliper into place
    • Slide in the 10mm bolts from behind
    • Begin threading the bolts by hand
    • Tighten the bolts with the 10mm socket
    • Tighten the bolts to 20 foot-pounds with the torque wrench
  8. step : Reinstalling the Wheel (11:12)
    • Slide the wheel on
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle
    • Torque the lug nuts to between 90 and 100 foot-pounds
  9. step : Testing the Brakes (11:34)
    • Pump the brakes repeatedly
    • Press the brake pedal
    • Put the vehicle into gear
    • Make sure the brakes hold the vehicle in gear
    • Test the brakes at5 miles per hour
    • Test the brakes at10 miles per hour
    • Road test the vehicle
