BHA53968 Axle / Spindle Nut Torque Specification

  1. step : Remove the wheel (1:30)
    • Loosen the lug nuts and the hub nut.
    • Raise and secure the vehicle
    • Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  2. step : Disassemble the brakes (2:15)
    • Unbolt the calipers using a T47 Torx bit and ratchet.
    • Compress your caliper using a flat blade screwdriver and remove it.
    • Use wire ties to secure the caliper up and out of the way.
    • Remove the caliper bracket by unbolting the two 15 mm bolts.
    • Pull the brake disc/rotor
  3. step : Loosen or remove the strut (5:10)
    • You want to move the strut out of the way.
    • Loosen or remove the top 13 mm nuts.
    • Apply penetrating oil on the nuts and bolts involved.
    • Disconnect the stabilizer link from the strut
    • Use your 17 mm socket to remove the stabilizer link from the strut.
    • Apply penetrating oil to the bottom 18 mm bolts and use a breaker bar or pipe to help break them loose.
    • Unclip the ABS sensor wiring from the strut.
    • Use a hammer to work the bottom bolts.
    • Either push the strut to the side or remove it completely, depending on whether you’d rather work around it or have it completely out of your way.
  4. step : Remove the axle (8:05)
    • Remove the hub nut with your 35 mm socket
    • Use a hammer and extension to push the axle out of the hub
    • Unbolt the axle on the transmission end with a 12 mm socket and ratchet and penetrating oil.
    • Pull the axle out using a pry bar.
    • Take care not to damage the CV joint
  5. step : Remove the hub (8:50)
    • If you didn't remove the strut, replace the 18 mm bolts to connect the steering knuckle and strut to help hold the steering knuckle at an angle.
    • Use your E14 Star Torx Bit and a ratchet to unbolt the hub.
    • Clean the steering knuckle with a wire brush.
    • Install the hub and torque the bolts to 70 ft lbs.
    • Rotate between the four hub bolts to torque them evenly.
  6. step : Reinstall the axle (11:20)
    • Work the axle back into the steering knuckle and transmission.
    • Bolt the axle in and torque the 12 mm bolts to 35 ft lbs
  7. step : Reinstall the strut (12:05)
    • Insert the strut into place and bolt the 13 mm nuts down and torque to 20-30 ft lbs.
    • Replace the stabilizer link and tighten the 17 mm bolt.
    • Torque the 18 mm bolts to 65-70 ft lbs.
  8. step : Re-assemble the brakes (13:40)
    • Replace the brake rotor
    • Replace the hub nut.
    • Install the caliper bracket and torque the 15 mm bolts to 70 ft lbs.
    • Put the brake pads into place and install the calipers.
    • Tighten the caliper bolts to 25-30 ft lbs.
  9. step : Replace the wheel (14:30)
    • Put the wheel on and hand tighten the lug nuts.
    • Lower the vehicle.
    • If your vehicle the small hub bolts, tighten to 33 ft lbs, if it uses a large nut, torque to 89 ft lbs plus an additional third of a turn.
    • Torque the lug nuts to 100 ft lbs.
    • Pump the brakes before road testing to recompress your caliper pistons.

Do you need to have the car aligned after the installation process described in the video/instructions?

BEST ANSWER: You generally do not need an alignment after this install. You can get one, if you feel like your vehicle does need one.
