Wear and Tear

  1. step : Removing the Wheel (0:24)
    • Loosen the lug nuts with a 21mm deep socket and breaker bar
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. step : Removing the Brake Pads (2:33)
    • Pry the brake pads into the caliper with a flat blade screwdriver to push in the pistons
    • Remove 14mm slide bolts from the brake caliper
    • Pull the caliper aside
    • Pry the brake pads off with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Remove the brake pad slides
  3. step : Removing the Brake Rotor (4:40)
    • Remove 17mm bolts from the brake caliper bracket
    • Pull off the brake caliper bracket
    • Pull the rotor off
    • If the rotor will not come off, thread the lug nuts and strike the hub area of the rotor with the ball end of a ball peen hammer
    • Or tighten a tap or M13 bolt into the holes to loosen the rotor
  4. step : Preparing the New Brake Pads and Rotors (9:35)
    • Spray the hub with brake parts cleaner
    • Clean off the hub with a wire brush
    • Clean the brake pad slides with a wire brush
    • Clean the caliper bracket with brake parts cleaner and a wire brush
    • Apply grease to the caliper slides
    • Clean the rotor with brake parts cleaner
    • Apply copper anti-seize to the hub
  5. step : Installing the New Brake Rotor (15:14)
    • Slide the rotor on
    • Thread on one lug nut to hold the rotor in place
    • Put the bracket back into place
    • Apply copper anti-seize to the caliper bracket bolts
    • Start the bolts by hand
    • Tighten the bolts to 79 foot-pounds of torque
  6. step : Installing the New Brake Pads (16:34)
    • Put an old pad in the caliper
    • Use a large C-clamp and the old pad to push the pistons back
    • Apply grease to the brake pad tabs
    • Install the new brake pads into the bracket
    • Put the caliper on
    • Thread bolts by hand
    • Tighten bolts to 25 foot-pounds
    • Clean the rotor with brake parts cleaner or mineral spirits
  7. step : Reattaching the Wheel (21:23)
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Tighten the lug nuts to 76 foot-pounds in a crossing or star pattern
  8. step : Testing the Brakes (23:27)
    • Pump your brakes repeatedly until they feel firm
    • Test your brakes at 5 miles per hour and then 10 miles per hour
    • Road test the vehicle
  9. step : Checking the Brake Fluid (23:03)
    • Twist the brake fluid reservoir cap off counterclockwise
    • Check the brake fluid level, using a flashlight if necessary
    • Check that the brake fluid is between the minimum and maximum lines
    • Check that the brake fluid is clear or an almost yellow color
    • If the brake fluid is murky or dark, drain and refill it
    • Twist the brake fluid reservoir cap on clockwise
