what is the plate for that comes with the timing chain tensioner?

The plate is like the gaskets the metal to metal seal. All you have to do is make sure you have a clean surface and bolted on twerking it to the correct specification and it should not leak.

I did not use the plates, the tensioners were exactly the same size and configuration as my original ones which didn't have the plate.

Didnt have to use the plates it came with. I just needed the water pump Sense the timing belt is right there i figure change it now cuz it has not been change and the car has 156,000 miles so a win win for me and the tensioner was the same as the oem one
