What are tailgate cables and where are they located?

Your tailgate cables, also referred to as tailgate straps, keep your tailgate level with your truck, Jeep, or wagon when the tailgate in the back of your vehicle is open. They are bolted on at the body of the truck and connect to the tailgate with eyelets. Without them, the tailgate would swing further open and hit the bumper, which might cause damage to the vehicle. Tailgate cables also need to be strong and durable enough to support the weight of the tailgate and maintain its levelness with your vehicle even when a heavy load is placed upon it.

A worn or broken tailgate support cable may not seem like a big deal but, believe it or not, faulty tailgate cables led to one of the biggest recalls in automotive history. In 2004, General Motors had to put out a recall on three-and-a-half million trucks after over 100 drivers suffered minor accidents due to collapsed tailgates.

How do I know if my tailgate cables need to be replaced?

If your tailgate sags when open, it’s probably time for new replacement tailgate cables. Visible fraying or wear of the cables is also a good sign that they need to be replaced.

Can I replace tailgate straps myself?

Replacing the tailgate straps should be easy enough. First, you’ll want to ensure that your cables are the correct length. Be sure to purchase cables specific to your make and model. You’ll simply need to disconnect the cables from the tailgate, carefully letting it drop. Then remove the bolts. This may require the use of a special bit. Then attach the new cables, raise or prop the tailgate back up, and attach the new cable eyelets to the tailgate. Now you can test the cables out by opening and closing the tailgate a couple of times.
