Known in the aftermarket as “The Problem Solver,” MOOG has a reputation for making parts that can replace or surpass OEM standards. They’ve been around for a long time with a history that dates back to 1919. Founded by Alva and Hubert Moog, the brothers actually purchased the Jenkins-Vulcan Spring Company in St. Louis after closing a wholesale liquor business in the face of prohibition. With their newly acquired company, the brothers manufactured leaf springs that were used on several early models of cars and trucks like the Ford Model T. The springs became known for their tough durability and high-capacity loads and were routinely tested in electronic heat furnaces to ensure a quality product. Soon the company expanded to manufacture piston rings and later a replacement for GM’s knee-action suspension. Revolutionizing the industry by offering kits for certain parts, MOOG’s prominence was also determined by its ability to offer a viable and, in some cases, better replacement. By 1943 MOOG Industries, Inc. was formed, and their determination to provide quality replacement parts lead to the development of several parts such as the gusher bearing and a “Zeromatic” ball joint that could sense corrosion and adjust to zero clearance.

By 1972 the name was changed to MOOG Automotive, Inc. They were a family owned business until 1977 after a purchase by IFI International. MOOG then became a subsidiary of Cooper Industries in 1992, and since 1998 have been a part of Federal-Mogul. Since Federal-Mogul’s acquisition, MOOG has expanded into the European market and continues to provide reliable replacements. They’re known for their M2 technology that’s built with a porous surface metal gusher that leaks grease to prevent friction, a heat-treated full-ball metal stud, and double bearings to improve longevity, performance, and steering. This kind of innovation is no stranger to MOOG’s history and can be found on several parts such as tie rods, ball joints, idler arms, and sway bar links. Staying true to their roots in suspension, MOOG also offers control arms, coil springs, rack and pinion steering parts, and more. Their reliability and innovation has not only made them a manufacturer of dominant parts, but has also made them a frequent contributor to NASCAR since 1953.
