In this video, we're going to replace a worn out lock cylinder. If you ever have any issues with your car, the key doesn't seem to work, it doesn't turn any way or it turns difficultly, you want to suspect your lock cylinder. You'll need a new ignition lock cylinder from 1A Auto, T25 Torx driver, a Phillips head screwdriver, a pick and a 10mm socket and ratchet.
Start out by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Using a 10mm wrench or a socket and ratchet, loosen up the bolt and remove the cable. Just for ease, put your steering wheel up and then there are two screws, they're either 7mm or T25 Torx screws. Remove those two screws and then you can pull your panel, there, down. Underneath the steering wheel, you'll find another T25 Torx screw. Remove that. Now you can pull down on that panel and it just snaps together in a couple of different places. Pull carefully, pull straight down, and then pull it out over the turn signal and steering column tilt lever and then pull up and off on the upper panel. You have to pull it over to get it by the lock cylinder and then up and off.
Take a small flat blade screwdriver, disconnect the electrical connection at the top, insert your key, turn it to the on position, and, then with a small awl, there's a little button or a pull on top, press down in there, you'll press a button and the lock cylinder comes out.
The old lock cylinder is on the bottom. The new one from 1A Auto and the new one has to be put together and keyed to accept your key. Now you're going to put a little white grease on each side. This is the old lock cylinder. You're going to put some white grease on each side where the tumblers are and that will actually help to keep them in place when you take the locks off. Here, we're going to remove the retainers, using a small sharp awl. You can see that the white grease does it job of keeping those tumblers in place. Now, you're very carefully going to use your awl to start on one side and take out the first tumbler. We have a little piece of paper with a diagram or just the key on it and put each tumbler on it. We're going to go to the next side, take the first one out, closest to where the key goes in, put it on the paper and just keep repeating that, taking them out in order.
You can see that we've updated our instruction sheet and you can see some cross outs. Basically there's a first style and a second style on these lock cylinders and the cylinder we sell replaces both styles. If you're replacing a first style, you actually omit a couple of the tumblers and that's what the paper is telling us. It's telling us that we put the first one in. It's telling us that we omit the second one. For the third one, there wasn't one and after that we put all the tumblers in as they are. Now each tumbler has a small number on it.
Now here, Don is opening up part of the packet. These are the springs. Before you put each tumbler in, you put a spring in first. I didn't quite get this shot but he's just putting a spring in the first slot. This is an old style, our car has an old style and we're putting in the new style so we omit the first one and the second tumbler has a small four on it so we grab a four from our new kit. You insert that into the lock cylinder and the tumblers and the cylinder are actually such a way that you can put them in the wrong order but you can't put them in the wrong side. Don just figures out the correct side. You put the spring in first and then you put the tumbler in on top of the spring. Can you move down a little bit. Come closer to this way. Yeah. We skip two. Now he's doing the next one, he puts the spring down in, checks the number on the tumbler, gets one from the kit and inserts it. Like I said before, we have an old style cylinder on the car and our replacement is a new style so you omit the first one and then the third one there wasn't one in the original so you just keep going right down, matching up the tumblers and putting them back in. Since we're placing our old style lock cylinder with a new lock cylinder, you'll notice that there are no brass retainers anymore. You just put the lock tumblers in place and that's it.
That's with the key. You can see that key way is up. Put the key in, and the key way goes down. Put some grease on the cylinder to lubricate it, work it down into the tumblers. There's a groove in the lock cylinder there, make sure you line it up with the groove on that lock cylinder, put it in, turn it backwards and it's in place. Reconnect your electrical connection and you can test fire the vehicle and then put your trim back together. Once you get the trim back on, you put those bolts back in place and reconnect your battery.

We're gonna disconnect the battery. Gonna use a 10 millimeter wrench and we're gonna disconnect the negative post on the battery. Just loosen this up a little bit. And I can grab it, and wiggle it back and forth. I can take it and tuck it out of the way. Alright, take this off. Just grab it and pull.
Now we're gonna grab this cover. We're gonna have two fingers over here, pull down. Grab over here with the other hand and kind of slide it out. If you struggle taking this out or installing it, you can remove this. I'm just gonna move the steering wheel down, so, I'm gonna push on that lever. Make sure, be careful for your fingers and then slide it down like that.
And then you're gonna grab the top part. Two fingers, and grab over there, and slide that out. We're gonna use a blunt pick that we had modified, we cut it off. You can use a regular pick for this, also. We're gonna take my key, gonna turn it like I'm cranking the engine. Then, I'm gonna push this down here and that's gonna release it and then I can wiggle this out. And this will come out completely.
This is our old lock cylinder. This is our new lock cylinder from 1A Auto. It's gonna come with this and all the keys and all these springs, and the directions. As you can see, it's almost identical. Has the same lock mechanism right here, has the same key hole, same plastic, same lock to hold the cylinder in. Get yours at 1aauto.com and you'll be ready to rock and roll.
Alright, first thing we want to do is set this up on a nice clean surface, so that we're gonna be able to see everything when we take it apart. We're gonna set up our bags over here, our springs, and our lubricant. We're gonna cut open the springs. Take those out.
And then we'll cut open these bags, we'll leave everything in the bags, like that. We're gonna take out the tumblers, one at a time. We're gonna write them down and when do that we are gonna put the new ones in, one at a time, and check it with the key.
So, to get these tumblers out, you can see the side that has kind of like a circle, right there. The opposite of this side, right there. So, that is the direction the tumbler is gonna come out. So, I need to flip it over. We're gonna push with a straight pick, down, and that's gonna pull the tumbler out. We can grab it, pull it out, and this ones very worn. See that, it looks like it says the number 3 on it, right there. So, we'll put that aside and we're gonna write down three for the first number. Then, we're gonna come over here, grab a spring. We're gonna stick this spring down in that round part of the slot. We're gonna grab a number three tumbler and push it in like that; on the first slot, I'm gonna push it down.
Then, as you can see, this little lock, that's what actually locks the cylinder. We're gonna take our key and were gonna try it and see if that goes down. Just like that, it went down.
And so, now we're gonna do that same thing, same procedure, with each one; one at a time. Push down, like that. Pull that tumbler out and that looks like a number one. And then, see how this side, the circle was on that? This one, we're gonna flip over and the circle's on this side. Stick that in and then we'll get out number one tumbler and push that down. We'll do the same, and check it, and that went all the way down.
So, repeat those steps for the rest of the tumblers. Now you can see that our key works. The lock goes down when I push in the key all the way. You can see all the tumblers moving when I pull it in and out. And now we're gonna take and put the grease all on here and then on the other side. And, it's ready to go back in.
We're gonna reinstall this lock cylinder. You wanna line this tab up, right here, this little keyway. You want to make sure the key's in there and you can turn it to the off position and pull it out. We're gonna reconnect our battery. Grab the negative cable and hook it back up.
Now, I'm gonna use my 10 millimeter wrench to tighten down the nut. Not too tight, you don't want to break the terminal. Tighten it and check it. Make sure it doesn't wiggle. Seems good. Before we put the covers back on, I reconnected the batter, I'm just gonna test it and make sure everything works and the vehicle starts and stuff. So, here we go and start the car. We want to check on the dash and make sure there's no theft light or anything. It looks like it's working properly.
Now we're gonna put this upper cover on. Gonna line this up with the rubber boot, over here. Try to get that on. Sometimes it a little tricky. Slide that in and slide the cover over here. Have it lined up and just push it down. That's good.
Now, we're gonna adjust our steering wheel up. Gonna slide the lower cover to the back and try to slide the boot onto the cover. There it goes, in the U. Slide the cover up and just click it in place. It's all locked in. We're gonna reinstall the steering column adjuster lever. Just push it in and you can adjust your steering wheel accordingly.

What's up, guys? I'm Andy from 1A Auto. In this video I'm going to show you how to remove and reinstall an ignition lock cylinder in this 2008 Chevy Silverado work truck. If you need parts for your vehicle, click the link in the description and head over to 1aauto.com.
All right, I'm going to disconnect the battery. This vehicle, there is a bracket missing here. Normally there would be a bracket here with four 13mm bolts. You would take those out to access the negative battery cable. I'm just going to use a 10mm wrench. Loosen up the cable. You can probably do it without taking that bracket off, but just make it easier to take the bracket off. Loosen this up. Wiggle it back and forth and set it aside.
I'm going to remove this cover right here. Just grab under here with your hand. Pull up. Slides right out. All right, next thing going to take a 10mm socket, extension, and a ratchet. I'm going to remove a bolt that's underneath this parking brake release lever right here.
Now, I'm going to take this release handle and slide it towards the front of the vehicle and then slip it out. There's these clips that hold it in. Next I'm going to remove two screws. There's one right here there's also one over here. This vehicle, it's missing. Just a Phillips head screw. Take that out. I'm gonna just grab this panel and pull it straight-forward. There's clips on the backside right here, right here, right here. Next I'm going to grab this handle for this steering wheel adjustment, and I'm just going to pull it straight outwards, just like that. Pull it off. This generally is very hard to get off if you have to, just try to get a little screwdriver and pry it out, but you really got to force it out.
Now, I'm going to grab this panel and pull it down. Sometimes there are screws that hold this lower steering column cover on, but this vehicle doesn't have screws, so just grab it, pull it straight down, just like that. Now, want to take the upper cover off. I'm just going to adjust the steering wheel down, just push back on that adjuster. Then grab cover, just slide it right up, just like that.
Then we're going to take the key, and I'm going to take a straight pick. Put the key in the ignition, turn it to the start position. It's important that you have the battery disconnected for this, otherwise your vehicle would be starting right now, so I'm going to push down. There's a little pinhole right there. When you push that down, that releases the lock cylinder, and you can slide it right out. Set it aside.
Now, we're going to take the ignition cylinder. There is a little tab right here that you have to line up with the slot in the cylinder housing. Line that up. Just wiggle it. Then you're all set.
Now, we're going to install this upper cover for the column cover just like that, and lock that down. Now we're going to adjust column up. Take the lower cover, just line this up. These little tabs, you're gonna. Want to line those tabs up with the upper cover and lock it in place right. All right.
To reinstall this steering wheel column adjustment lever, just line this tab up and just lock it in place. All right, now we're gonna install this cover. Just line it up. Lock it in place. And then next we're going to install this screw, a Phillips head screwdriver, and if your vehicle had another one, you can install it over here as well. But this vehicle doesn't have it. Snug that up.
Next we'll install this parking brake cable release. Slide that over there, and then take the 10mm bolt, get this started right here.
Now, we'll install this side covered. Just line those clips up, lock it in place. Now I'm going to grab the negative battery cable. Slide this over the terminal on the battery, and then take a 10mm wrench and just snug this up. Not too tight. You don't want to break it. Just make sure you grab the terminal, grab the cable and make sure it doesn't twist. That's good. And then if you had that bracket here, you're gonna. Want to reinstall that bracket.
