How to use the shift lock release to put the transmission in neutral when the car won't start on 14 Subaru XV Crosstrek.
Flat Blade Screwdriver
Painter's Tape
Hi. I'm Mike from 1AAuto. We've been selling auto parts for over 30 years!
If, for some reason, the vehicle can't be started, or the battery is dead, and you need to have it towed, and it needs to go on the back of a flat-bedded tow truck, and you want to put it in neutral, but you can't move the shifter, there's a shift lock release.
Use a flat-bladed screw driver. I've put some tape on here to protect the trim. Just pop the cap up. Boop. Put that where I won't lose it.
Put the screwdriver down in the opening, and I'm going to put my foot on the so the car doesn’t roll. Then push it down, and then I can push the button in and shift it into neutral. Now the car can roll and be put on to a tow truck. Let me just put on the brake, and it won't go into park, so we're going to hit the shift lock release again. So if you hit the button, it doesn't go anywhere until you do the manual shift lock release. Then you just reinstall the cover just like that.
