step 1 :Lowering the Spare Tire
- Open the storage compartment
- Open the spare tire hoist cap
- Turn the hoist with the tire iron
- If the mechanism is frozen, support the spare tire with a jack
- Cut the tire support with a torch or reciprocating saw
- Lower the wheel to the ground
- If the mechanism is working, lower the tire to the ground with the hoist
- Remove the tire from the support

step 2 :Removing the Spare Tire Hoist
- Remove the four 13mm bolts from the tire hoist
- Remove the hoist from the frame

step 3 :Installing the Spare Tire Hoist
- Lift the hoist into place
- Line up the hoist using the pins
- Start the four 13mm bolts into the hoist
- Tighten the four 13mm bolts to 25 to 30 foot-pounds of torque

step 4 :Raising the Spare Tire
- Turn the hoist with a tire iron to let out the cable
- Insert the tire support through the center of the tire
- Raise the tire by turning the hoist with the tire iron
- Put the tire iron into the storage compartment
- Put on the hoist cap
- Close the storage compartment

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the spare tire hoist. A lot of times, they get rusted out or corroded, and they don't work correctly. We're working on a 2006 Ford Explorer. The spare tire holder is activated right here. Just pull this up, and you can use your tire iron or a 19mm deep socket and ratchet. You want to check this every once in a while and make sure it's working properly. You don't want to get to a point where you need your spare tire, and you can't get to it, because this mechanism rides underneath the vehicle, and it can tend to get – if salt, and dirt, and stuff gets in there, it can seize up and not work correctly. You should be able to turn it counterclockwise, and your tire should come down. It should work pretty smoothly. If you feel any binding or anything like that, then it's time to replace the mechanism. If you can, let your tire all the way down. If your mechanism's frozen, support the wheel with a jack.
Then you want to cut this off. Basically, you need to cut above this washer to remove the cable. If you don't support this, once you cut that, your wheel's going to fall down, and it's going to possibly hurt you, so make sure you support it and cut this. Use a reciprocating saw or the easiest way is if you have a friend, or you have a torch available, you can just cut right through it with a torch.
If your mechanism's working, keep on winding it, and keep pulling the tire out until you can easily reach this. Then once it gets to a certain point, drop it down in. Reach underneath, and put it up through. Get the tire out of the way.
Four 13mm bolts hold it in place. Socket ratchet and extension makes it nice and easy. Last bolt comes out and it comes right down.
The original part from the vehicle’s on the right; a new part from 1A Auto on the left. Actually, this is a non-rust belt vehicle, so this is actually in pretty good shape, but you can see it, even with that, it's starting to corrode here. A lot of times these rust out, or the mechanism starts leaking through one of the rivets, and the mechanism seizes up, but you can see, the new part from 1A Auto is exactly the same. It actually has better rivets that are more watertight. It's going to install just like your original, and you'll be able to get your spare tire in and out with no problems.
Even after you reinstall the new part from 1A Auto, we do recommend once a year, just run this thing down and up, just to make sure it keeps working correctly.
Put the new one up in. It's pretty tough to put it in wrong, because you want this to go up into the tube. Then there's a couple line-up pins, one here and one here. Put them in place, and then put your four bolts back in. We'll tighten them up, and tighten these up. There's no official torque spec, but 25 to 30 foot pounds is probably enough.
Reel it all the way down, and put your tire into place. Put the cable in first, then slide this into place. You just leave it there and go up. As of this shooting, this replacement actually goes the opposite way, so it's counterclockwise to raise it. We are going to work with our manufacturer to change it, so it works as the sticker indicates. But raise it all the way up. It'll just suck the tire right underneath. Once it gets hard, do it one extra turn, and it's up in place. Put your wrench, or your lug wrench, back. Close it up.
