Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.

In this video we're going to show you how to replace the alternator on this 1986 Camaro IROC-Z; it's the same for any '82 to '92 Camaro or Firebird. The tools you'll need are 8, 10, 14, and 15mm . and you can either use wrenches or you can use sockets with a ratchet.

Disconnect your negative battery cable. This vehicle should have the side post that uses an 8mm wrench or socket ratchet; somebody's replaced the battery cables. The alternator in our vehicle is actually working fine; we're just going to show you how to remove it and put it back in. Next, you want to disconnect the leads there, and then back here, and pull this boot back. There's a 10mm nut, and remove that. We'll speed it up here, as we just use a 10mm wrench to remove that nut and remove that battery lead from the back of the alternator. Now, use a 15mm socket with a ratchet. Work on this bolt some. Okay, then this bolt down here is a 14mm. Soon as I loosen that up, the alternator goes in. We can remove the belt. We'll fast forward here a little more, as I remove that upper bolt the rest of the way, and then remove that lower bolt. Now, the alternator comes out and up.

In the back of the alternator is a bracket. You probably saw it swinging. The bolt was not even -- I mean, it's not even finger tight. You want to swap that over to your new alternator, if you're putting one in, and then tighten that bolt up after you install the alternator.

First, let's move our harnesses out of the way here, take our alternator, put the top into place, and then let this bracket kind of slide in first, slide it down into place. Bolt through and get it started. Put that in place. I'll just shake that a little bit. It lets that larger bolt down there get started. Now, we try to put the belt on; just force the alternator in toward the engine a little more, give yourself a little more slack to allow that belt to go up and over the pulley. Use a small pry bar or a big screwdriver, then pull, pry up. Just a quick note while I'm tightening up that bottom one: that's good to start your vehicle up, shut it off, check the tension of the belt and re-tighten it if necessary. Okay, now you need 15mm wrench and back behind, tighten up our brace, and this lead, and the battery lead ground. I'm going to speed it up here as I put that battery lead on, and tighten up that 10mm nut that holds it on. Last but not least, reconnect your battery.
