In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall the tailgate on this 1996 GMC Sierra K1500. You might want to do this if you have to put something large in the bed, and don't want to risk putting any weight down on the tailgate, or if your old tailgate is damaged, like ours' is, or rusting out, and you just want to replace it with a new part.

Open your tailgate, but don't allow it to open all the way. We have our cables here for the tailgate that have this little spring safety. You'll want to lift up, and push it around the stud so you can get the stud into this larger portion of the keyhole and pop it off. Our safety is missing from the other side here, so we'll just push it in, move it off the stud. You want to open it about halfway, lift up on the passenger side, grab it, and slide to the driver's side, and your tailgate comes off.

To reinstall, push the pivot onto the driver's side, and with the tailgate lifted up about halfway, we can set the slot in on the passenger's side. Put our stud in through the keyhole, and pull back. Do the same thing on the opposite side. Lock it into place. Make sure it's on there nice and secure. You're good to go.
