In this video we're going to be working with our 2004 Ford Crown Victoria 4.6L V8. We're going to show you how to clean off your battery. You can see this one is pretty filthy. All you need for this is a 5/16 or 8mm socket and ratchet or wrench, some battery terminal cleaner and protectant spray, and, if yours is bad, you're going to want one of these battery terminal cleaner tools.

Use your socket ratchet or wrench to loosen the nut on your battery terminal, always start with the negative side. Isolate the terminal for now. You can just kind of stick it down the side of the battery, lift up the cover, and do the same thing on the positive terminal. We'll now spray down the battery with some battery terminal cleaner. You can also use hot water alternatively, it works well, but this stuff works great.

Place your terminal cleaner on top, twist it around, clean all that dirt and debris off of there. Use a paper towel to wipe off the rest along with any dirt and debris that's on top of the battery, as certain types of debris or moisture can cause what's called surface discharge in which a little bit of voltage is dropped across the debris on the surface of the battery. Now we'll place our paper towel over the positive terminal just to keep it from contacting.

Spray a little more cleaner on our terminal. You can use a wire brush for this, or you can use the other side of that terminal cleaner if you have it. Be sure you don't get the paper towel wrapped in there like that. Clean all that out and then, once again, wipe off all the excess cleaner. While you're doing this, get into all the other places that that cleaner brush didn't contact. Just isolate that again real quick, because we aren't quite ready. We'll do the same thing with our negative battery terminal.

Reinstall your positive terminal, tighten it back down. You don't really have to crush these. You see a lot of them that get wrapped around. That actually stretches them out a little bit and makes it so they don't fit as securely on the terminal, so you really just need to go until it's snug and it doesn't move.

Reinstall your cover on the positive side, and reconnect your negative side. Do the same thing. Once we're done, we'll just spray a little ignition and battery sealer, this is also called terminal protectant, on there just to prevent any new corrosion from forming. Keep cleaning and maintenance of your battery, keeps away harmful corrosion and debris, which can cause low amperage, voltage drop across the surface of the battery depending on the contaminants involved. You can get a surface discharge on there, which weakens your battery's output. Keeping it clean and protected like we have here on a regular basis is a great way to ensure the longevity of your battery and prevent you from getting stranded.
