Hella is one of the world’s largest internationally operated automotive parts and accessories supplier. It was originally founded in 1899 in Germany by Sally Windmuller as Westfälische Metall-Industrie Aktien-Gesellschaft or Westphalian Metals Industry Ltd. (WMI). Since its inception it has generally aimed to improve the amount of light that a motor vehicle can emit. This first started with the acetylene headlamp in 1908 which was a gas lamp that required a separate start-up from the engine. The Hella name first appeared around this time as a trademark for these headlights. The company also began to produce a battery-powered light and offered tail lights, sidelights, and license plate lights, though they were seen as a luxurious upgrade at the time.

By the early ‘20s, the manufacturing family Lüdenscheider Hueck had gained a majority ownership of the company. In 1926 the Hella brand was officially registered by WMI, though it would not appear in the companies’ name until decades later. As the economy slowly picked back up from the repercussions of WWI and the stock market crash, Hella made huge contributions to automobile companies (like Ford and Volkswagen) where they supplied vehicles with headlamps and horns. Hella’s innovation was so influential they continued to contribute lighting to the automobile and were called upon in WWII to produce headlights for army vehicles.

Throughout the years, WMI continued to improve and help revolutionize the headlight. They developed many types, such as halogen, projection, xenon, and LED headlights. Though the name was changed in 1986 to Hella KGaA Hueck & Co., they still serve the same purpose of bringing technology and lighting to automobiles by specializing in interior and exterior methods. Lately, Hella has been developing wireless charging systems for electric cars in conjunction with Vahle, Inc. If successful, Hella will add another useful and innovative advancement to its long and productive history. While the companies’ core areas are automotive lighting and electrical components, Hella also produces products focused on thermal management such as water pumps and thermostats.
