What are Tapered Bearings and Why Use Them?

Tapered bearings are better than roller ball bearings at handling forces exerted on the bearing during cornering (known as axial load) in trucks and large cars. 

Roller ball bearings have spherical ball bearings between two straight rings (called races). Tapered bearings use tapered rollers shaped like flat-topped cones and two races angled from the outside to the inside of the bearing. The greater the angle, the more axial load the bearing can handle.

Your model came from the factory with tapered bearings. This type of bearing handles cornering forces better for trucks and large cars. Roller ball bearings work well for smaller cars, but replacing a tapered bearing with a roller ball bearing will result in increased wear and faster failure.

Wear and Tear

This item is backed by a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under its intended use. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear. Please keep your invoice for proof of this warranty.

  1. step : Removing the Wheel (0:41)
    • Loosen the lug nut covers with a 22mm socket
    • Pry off the center cap with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Loosen the lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. step : Inspecting the Brakes (1:11)
    • Check the thickness of the brake pads
    • Check the brake pad wear indicator
  3. step : Removing the Rotor and Brake Pads (1:23)
    • Remove T55 Torx bolts from the brake caliper with a T55 Torx bit and ratchet
    • Use either a C-clamp to squeeze the rotor or a screwdriver to pry the brake caliper off
    • Pry the brake pads off with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Remove the two 18mm bolts from the caliper bracket
    • Slide the rotor off
  4. step : Preparing the Rotor and Brake Caliper (3:09)
    • Apply brake cleaner to either side of the rotor
    • Apply brake grease to either end of your brake pads
    • Use a wire brush to clean up the brake slides on the caliper bracket
  5. step : Replacing the Brake Caliper (3:46)
    • Push the rotor back into place
    • Twist on a lug nut
    • Put the caliper back into place and tighten the two 18mm bolts
    • Torque the 18mm bolts to 75 ft/lbs
    • Push the brake pads into place, using a hammer if necessary
    • Using an old brake pad, put it on to the caliper pistons and tighten it in with the C-Clamp
    • Grease up the caliper bolts
    • Put the caliper back into place
    • Slide the slide bolts back in
    • Torque the bolts to 30 ft/lbs
  6. step : Reattaching the Wheel (5:45)
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft/lbs in a crossing or star pattern
    • Reattach the hubcap and tighten the caps
  7. step : Testing the Brakes (6:20)
    • Pump your brakes repeatedly until they feel firm
    • Test your brakes at 5 miles per hour and then 10 miles per hour
    • Road test the vehicle

Im sorry I cant remember and my mechanic threw all the boxes away but the brakes might be the best Ive ever bought after the regular factory brakes. They stop smoothly with no sound at all and the bearings killed the wine I had in the wheels. Im very happy with them and the price was great for the bundle I bought.
