What are Tapered Bearings and Why Use Them?

Tapered bearings are better than roller ball bearings at handling forces exerted on the bearing during cornering (known as axial load) in trucks and large cars.

Roller ball bearings have spherical ball bearings between two straight rings (called races). Tapered bearings use tapered rollers shaped like flat-topped cones and two races angled from the outside to the inside of the bearing. The greater the angle, the more axial load the bearing can handle.

Your model came from the factory with tapered bearings. This type of bearing handles cornering forces better for trucks and large cars. Roller ball bearings work well for smaller cars, but replacing a tapered bearing with a roller ball bearing will result in increased wear and faster failure.

Zinc Coated

Helps reduce rust and corrosion for a longer-lasting and better looking rotor.

"True" Non-Interference Vane Design

Retains the structural integrity of the rotor

CNC Cross Drilled and Slotted

Precision-Rounded End Slots remove brake dust and expel gasses during hard braking.

Cross Drilled Holes improve ventilation and cooling for less brake fade and more positive stopping power.

    • Remove the lug nuts with your 22mm socket and ratchet.
    • Remove the wheel and set aside.
  2. step : Remove the calipers (1:35)
    • Use a screwdriver to force the pistons back in.
    • Remove the two 3/8 Allen bolts to remove the calipers.
    • Use a wire tie to fasten the caliper out of the way.
    • Use your screwdriver to pry out your brake pads.
    • Remove the caliper bolt sleeves.
    • Check their condition and clean them with a wire brush if necessary.
    • Compress the caliper piston with a c-clamp.
    • Pull off the brake rotor.
    • Hit the rotor with a rubber mallet or hammer if necessary.
    • Take care not to damage the lug studs.
  3. step : Install new rotor and pads (7:15)

    • Make sure to use a star pattern when putting your wheel lugs back on.
    • Tighten to 100-120 ft lbs.
    • Replace hubcap/center cap.
  5. step : Test and set brakes (10:08)
    • Before driving the car again, start it up and pump the brakes a few times to get the pistons in the brakes in place.
    • Test the brakes in your driveway before taking the car onto the road.
    • Set your rotors by evenly braking from 30mph to 10mph, 50mph-30mph and finally 70mph to 40mph.
    • This is best done on a straight back road without any traffic.

Brakes work great wheel bearings have both failed already.
Rotors, pads, and bearings were all installed at the same time. I have no complaints about the brakes. Everything fit perfectly. Truck stops on a dime. The wheel bearings lasted about 6 months. Again fit properly just didn't last. The axle nuts were properly torqued and the rest of the steering components were all new. Tie rods, ball joints, pitman, idler arm and bracket. The alignment was done also after everything was put in.

Broke, but not broke down.
Several times I have relied on 1A Auto to give me what I need, and with minimal error, this time was no different. ABS wheel bearings, slotted rotors and pads are essential to a safe vehicle and peace of mind. I know that every time things get dicey, my brakes aren’t going to fail me, let alone the whole rebuilt suspension, steering, joints, and differential supplies I’ve purchased. What a safe choice every time!!
