Ford Mazda Lincoln Mercury Blower Motor Resistor TRQ HCA40068

What's up, guys? I'm Andy from 1A Auto. In this video I'm going to show you how to replace this blower motor resistor on this 2012 Ford escape. If you need this part or other parts for your vehicle, click the link in the description and head over to 1aauto.com.

So when I turn the key on and I have the HVAC on, and I'm going through the blower motor settings--one, two, three, nothing happens. Once I get to setting number four, it comes on full blast. So at this point, I'm going to replace the blower motor resistor. If you have this same problem, you may need a blower motor resistor.

All right, I'm going to open the glove box. Pull that open. Then, on the sides, I'm just going to use my hands and push. Try to get this glove box to flip down, just like that. Now the blower motor resistor is located right here in the top of this HVAC box. What I'm going to do is the connector's a little tricky to disconnect. I am going to use a pick and try to push it on this lock while I lift up on the connector. I'll show you that right there. That's where the lock is. They don't give you much room to get your finger in there, and that will release the tab on that. So disconnect that.

With that out of your way, I'm going to take a eight millimeter socket and extension and a ratchet, and there's two bolts that go down from the top. It's a little bit tricky to get your hands in here. Take these bolts out or screws. There's a couple of screws. Once that's loose, take that screw out, and I'll take the other one out. Now you need the extension more for this other one. Not so much that first one. You might be able to do it without an extension, but take this out. And once it's loose, you can do it by hand, take that screw out, and I can grab the resistor and just slide it up just like that.

Here's the old resistor. Here's the new blower motor resistor from 1aauto.com. As you can see it's got the same shape. You look at the end and the connector is the same; the other side is the same. Get yours at 1aauto.com and you'll be ready to rock and roll.

Now I'll take the new resistor. Get it in position and slide it down just like that. Kind of hard. Really can't see what you're doing. There are a couple of tabs that line up with the holes on the resistor. Look at the old resistor. This is where the screws go. So with it like that, there's a screw there and a screw there. And then there's two little pins that line the resistor up. So get both screws started just by hand. And I'll take my eight millimeter socket and ratchet, I'll tighten these down. It is in plastic, so you just want to snug it, not too tight. Okay with those tight, then I can reconnect the connector. Line that up and lock it in place. Again, take the glove box, push this in a little bit, and close that.

Right now we're going to test it. Turn the key on, and I can hear the blower motor working on setting one, number two, on three and also four. So we fixed the problem.

Okay, friends. To get started on our blower motor resistor, let's go ahead and open up our glove box, squeezing on the sides that way there these tabs release. Looking behind here, you're going to be able to see your blower motor resistor. You can either try to access this right through up here or, of course, you can try to come underneath the dash which is pretty easy as well. I'm just going to them squeeze on the little tab. I'll draw this off of here and now I'll show you what tab I'm talking about. Right here where my index finger is the tab, you squeeze that and pull it away and it releases. At this point, we have a nice clear view of our resistor. You have a mounting bolt right here on the lower aspect of it closest to us. And then on the upper aspect, right over here farthest away. Remove both of those 8-millimeter headed bolts. There we are we are. Grab that resistor, take it right out of there. There it is, friends.

All right, friends, now it's going to be time to install our brand new blower motor resistor. Looking at the front, you can tell that there's an area that has a slash out on one of the corners. As we install this resistor, we want to go on in just like this so the slash on the top facing towards us. So carefully slide this right in. It should want to line up with the pitons that are there. We'll start in both of the bolts and then we'll snug them up. Okay. That's bottomed out. You don't want to go too much further than when it's bottomed out only because the screw is actually going directly in the plastic. If you go too tight, you could strip it. Bottomed out a teeny bit more. Now, let's go ahead and connect this in. There we are. At this point, go ahead and close this up by squeezing the two pieces together. All right. Now, all you have to do is test your blower motor on all speeds.

One of the first things I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take out this glovebox right here. If you were to look right underneath, you're gonna see four mounting bolts. I'm gonna remove those. Grab the glovebox. Be careful because it might wanna fall down. Grab those sides and pull it right out.

At this point, you have a clear view of where your blower motor resistor is. I'm gonna grab onto this little button, squeeze it, and then draw this down. I always take a peek inside, make sure I don't see any funny colors. This one actually looks really good, so I'm gonna continue on by removing the two mounting bolts, using an 8-millimeter. There it is. Awesome.

Let's get ready to install our new resistor. Should slide right in. We've got our two screws. Now I'm gonna carefully tighten these up, just till they bottom out. Okay. They're both bottomed out. Just gonna give them a teeny bit more. There it is. Grab that wiring harness. Click it in. Give it a tug. Now you would just test your blower motor and make sure it works on all speeds. Oh, yeah. Perfect.

Let's get our glovebox back in here. First put up one side. Put up the other side. I'm just gonna latch it in. That's gonna hold it for me. Now we'll come like this. We're gonna screw in all of our mounting screws down along here. Snug them up. Awesome.

All right, so coming in on your passenger's side, right underneath the glove box, you're gonna be able to see your blower motor resistor. It should be fairly easy to get to. We're gonna remove the wiring harness from it and then, of course, of the two mounting bolts. Let's get started.

Now, if you take your finger and you press right on this little center point, you'll be able to squeeze that and then draw this away. I always take a peek at my wiring harness. Make sure there's no funny colors. If you see something, you know you have to repair that. This looks good, so I'll set it aside. Now I can see my mounting bolt here and one right there, remove them both. There's one. It's out. There's our second. And then of course the blower motor resistor.

Now it's gonna be time to install our brand new blower motor resistor. If you were look at it, you can see that it has one corner that's, kind of, angled off. That needs to be on the top and towards the rear. I'm just gonna put it just like this, I'll slide it directly into the box, and then, of course, we'll put in our two mounting bolts. Okay. There it is. Just like that. Let's get this one in a few good threads. You want it to be as straight as possible. You're gonna be screwing into plastic, so it could be very simple to accidentally cross-thread in your bolt or even strip out the plastic box. Okay, so I get that one bottomed out. Do the same thing to the other one. You don't wanna overtighten these. Like I said, they're only screwed into plastic. Okay, that's bottomed out, just a tiny weeny bit more. That's it. Let's get our pigtail reattached. Push it in. Listen for a click. Give it a tug. That feels great. Now we're gonna test our blower motor.

All right, I can hear the blower motor on level one, two, three, oh yeah, and it works on high. This is perfect.
