Wear and Tear

  1. step : Removing the Wheel (0:17)
    • Use the key socket
    • Loosen the 19mm lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. step : Removing the Brake Pads (1:30)
    • Remove the two 12mm slide pin bolts
    • Remove the bolts with a ratcheting wrench
    • Lift the caliper off
    • Secure the caliper out of the way with a bungee cord
    • Check the movement of the slide pins
    • Slide the brake pads out
    • Remove the 14mm caliper bracket bolts
    • Remove the caliper bracket
  3. step : Removing the Rotor (4:33)
    • Remove the Phillips head screws from the rotor
    • Make sure the parking brake is released
    • If the rotor is stuck, use an 8mm x 1.25 bolt
    • Remove the rotor
  4. step : Preparing the Rotor, Pads, and Caliper (8:10)
    • Clean off the hub with a wire brush
    • Clean both sides of the rotor with brake parts cleaner
    • Tighten the Phillips head screws to the rotor
    • Apply grease to the caliper bracket slides if needed
    • Clean the brake pad slides with a wire brush
    • Apply grease to the caliper slides
    • Apply grease to the brake pad tabs
  5. step : Reinstalling the Caliper Bracket, Rotor, and Brake Pads (14:12)
    • Insert the caliper bracket onto the rotor
    • Hand-tighten the bolts
    • Insert the brake pads onto the bracket
    • Place an old brake pad into the caliper
    • Press the brake pad into the piston with a c-clamp
    • Insert the caliper to the caliper bracket
    • Hand-tighten the bolts
    • Torque the bracket bolts to 41 foot-pounds
    • Torque the slide pin bolts to 27 foot-pounds
  6. step : Reattaching the Wheel (18:32)
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Tighten the lug nuts to 80 foot-pounds in a crossing or star pattern
