What are dash vents and where are they located?

The dash vents are the last stop for air that flows through your heating and A/C system. These include all the interior vents in the dashboard that blow air onto you and your front seat passengers, as well as the vent below the windshield for defrosting. They direct the air wherever you want to help keep you nice and comfortable.

The dash vents usually contain window shutter-like slats that can be opened or closed depending on how much air you have blowing on you. This is useful if you have a passenger who’s always too hot or too cold when you’ve got the temperature set right to your sweet spot. Dash vents are sometimes called dash louvers, because louver is a fancy word for shutter. This is not to be confused with the museum in Paris, which is the Louvre.

How do I know if my dash air vents need to be replaced?

Dash air vents can get dry, cracked, or just plain worn over time. Replacing cracked or worn dash vents will help give your interior back some of its luster.

Dash louvers can become broken or stuck, from frequent use. If you have children who think the dash vents make for a fun toy, then you may wind up with broken dash louvers. In this case, replacing your car or truck’s louvers will help get your ventilation working again.

Sometimes mold may grow on or in your air vents, which might cause unpleasant smells when you try to run the heat or A/C. Smells can, of course, come in from the outside, other parts of the HVAC system, or your passengers. If you’re certain that it’s your air vents that are causing the odor, you may be able to simply remove them, clean them with soapy water and reinstall them.

Can I replace dash vents myself?

If your dash vents are stuck or just don’t look as good as they used to, they will prove easy to replace. You just need to separate the vent from the dashboard and install the new one. In some cases you may need to remove screws from the vent cover to get it off. In others, you may be able to simply pry it off by hand or with a screwdriver. Sometimes you may have to remove the dashboard panel from the vehicle before you can get the vents out of it. The exact technique needed to replace your dash vents will vary from one model to another.
