1996-00 Brake Kit Nakamoto MD591, 4509340 - 1ABFS00009

Hearing squeaking noises from the wheels? This may be the wear tabs on the brake shoes saying, "it is time for replacement." Aging brakes can also result in a pulsation from the brake pedal or long stopping distances. Brakes should be inspected every 10,000 miles or any time the tires are removed. They may need frequent replacement such as every 20,000 miles if used in stop and go traffic. Brakes can last longer if the vehicle is used primarily for long highway trips.

  1. step : Remove the wheel (0:58)
    • Use your lug wrench or 19 mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts.
    • Raise and secure the vehicle.
    • Remove the lug nuts the rest of the way and set the wheel aside.
  2. step : Dismantle the brakes and discard the old pads and rotors. (1:12)
    • Observe your rotors and brake pads; look for signs of excess wear, uneven wear, or gouging in the pads and rotors.
    • Use your 10 mm socket and breaker bar to remove the caliper bolts.
    • Use a flat blade screwdriver and a prying motion to compress the caliper pistons enough to get the caliper off the rotor.
    • Discard the old brake pads and compress the caliper with a large c-clamp.
    • Remove the rotor.
  3. step : Install the new pads and rotor and reassemble the brakes. (3:34)
    • Hit the new rotor with brake parts cleaner or mineral spirits to remove any grease that may cause parts of the brakes to run hot and cause uneven wear.
    • Mount the new brake pads followed by the calipers.
    • Torque the 10 mm caliper bolts to 17-19 ft lbs.
  4. step : Replace the wheel (5:54)
    • Mount the wheel and preliminarily tighten the lug nuts (but do not torque them just yet)
