The ignition coil is a crucial part of your ignition system. It's function is to convert the 12 volt power of your vehicle's electrical system in to 35,000 or more volts. This produces a high intensity spark at the spark plug which then ignites the fuel in the cylinder. Coils in general will wear out over time and cause a misfire condition. In engines like this that use a coil, if the coil goes bad, the complete assembly needs to be replaced.

  1. step : Removing the Distributor (1:02)
    • Unplug the wire underneath the distributor from the coil and distributor.
    • Remove the two 8mm bolts.
    • Pull the cap away.
    • You want the rotor to be facing straight up. Turn the key in the ignition to spin it into place.
    • Remove the 12mm bolt to the side of the distributor.
    • Pull the distributor out and press the button on the connector to remove it.
  2. step : Replacing the Ignition Coil (4:16)
    • Disconnect the ignition coil harness.
    • Remove the three 10mm bolts.
    • Pull the ignition coil out.
    • Put a bolt through the new ignition coil and put it down into place.
    • Replace and tighten all three 10mm bolts.
    • Plug the harness back in.
  3. step : Replacing the Distributor (7:05)
    • Reconnect the distributor.
    • Put the distributor into place exactly the way it was.
    • Replace the 12mm bolt.
    • Replace the distributor cap.
    • Replace the 8mm bolts.
    • Replace the wire.
