Sound Deadener at 1A Auto

What is Sound Deadening Material and where is it Located in a Vehicle?

Cars are noisy machines. That’s a big part of what we love about them, after all. Sometimes, though, you need to concentrate, or you might just need a little peace and quiet. Sound deadening material helps keep the cabin of your car quiet. They dampen sound from the tires, the engine, and the exhaust, among other sources. Sound deadening material can’t keep noise completely out of the cabin, nor would you want it to. It’s important to be able to hear how the car is running and to hear what’s going on around you. What sound deadening material can do is make your ride quieter and more pleasant.

Sound deadener material can be found under your car’s carpet, on the back of the door panels, behind the dashboard, and around the trunk. The dense material absorbs sound to reduce cabin noise. Subsequently, sound deadening material installed in certain areas of a vehicle will work as insulation and reduce heat transfer, thus keeping your cabin from getting too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.

There are a number of different materials automotive sound deadener can be made from. The material may be plant-based or synthetic. Jute is a coarse plant fiber similar to flax or hemp. When tightly woven, jute is used in some sound deadeners. Another plant-based material commonly used in sound deadeners is mastic, which is a tar-like product made from the sap of a mastic tree.

A common synthetic insulator is Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). This is the same type of foam-rubber used in bicycle seats, ski boots, and fishing rod handle pads. Some sound deadener is backed with foil, similar to home heat flashing. This helps with thermal insulation.

How do I Know if my Sound Deadener Material Needs to be Replaced?

Rattling sounds or vibrations from beneath the floor are good indicators that your sound deadeners are getting worn out. The insulating material can deteriorate over time, making it more permeable to sound.

Deteriorating material also does a poorer job as a thermal insulator. The car may heat up excessively due to heat rising from the road. If the interior of your car is tough to cool down, even with the air conditioning on, it may time to change the insulation. The worn material can lose some of its thickness and strength, so loose carpet might indicate that the insulation really is the source of your problems.

Can I Replace Sound Deadeners Myself?

Replacing sound deadeners is a very involved process with many steps. Although none of the steps is highly technical, when combined, the process can take a long time.

As with automotive carpet, you’ll need to smooth out the sound deadeners before you can install them. Leaving them in a warm, dry place can speed up this process. You may have to remove the door panels, the dashboard, the seats, or the carpet to access some sound deadener material. Then you can remove the worn sound deadeners. In order to make a smooth surface to attach the new deadeners to, you’ll want to clean the mounting area with acetone. Then use adhesive to stick the new deadeners in place, and you can reinstall everything you had removed.
