What are Jack Pads and where are they Located?

Jack pads, also referred to as jack stand, floor jack and jack saddle pads, are rubber pads that protect the frame of your vehicle while it is being supported on a floor jack or lift when it is needed to work on or repair your vehicle. If your vehicle uses jack pads, there will be four of them: one at each lifting point, near each door, underneath the body. The rubber compresses to cushion the weight of the vehicle from the pressure of the floor jack or lift. The pads also keep the jack from slipping and damaging your car’s floor, and help to distribute the weight more evenly on the jack, as a small jack can bend/kink metal parts if not careful. They also give the jack a bit more clearance to not cause damage to body parts on automobiles that have side moldings or ground effects.

How do I Know if my Jack Pads Need to be Replaced?

Someday, you may need to jack up your vehicle and find that the jack pad is torn up, or even missing completely. Since the jack saddle pads are mounted underneath the vehicle, they get exposed to road salt, dirt, rocks, and other debris that can damage them.

One subtle sign of a missing jack pad is a whistling sound from underneath the vehicle at high speed. Jack stand pads are often mounted into the frame with a locking clip. If the pad and clip are gone, air can flow into the clip’s hole, turning your vehicle into a big flute. However, with all of the other road/suspension/chassis/aerodynamic noise going on during normal driving, you may not even notice one more chassis hole, as there's quite a few of them to begin with.

Can I Replace Jack Pads Myself?

Replacing floor jack pads is a fairly simple task. You can pry off the locking clip with a screwdriver. Then pull off the old pad. You’ll want to clean the mounting area before you install the new pad. Putting soapy water or another lubricant on the new pad can make it easier to push into place. Once the pad’s in place, you can push it in with your floor jack. Once the pad is in, just install the locking clip.
