How to Replace Power Window Motor 2003-05 Chevy Impala

step 1 :Remove door panel.

step 2 :Remove water shield.
- Carefully remove the water shield.
- Take care not to rip it, as it keeps water from getting into your door.

step 3 :Unbolt Regulator
- Plug your power windows back in and tape it up.
- Lift up the window and tape it up out of the way.
- Remove the bolts with your wrench or socket and ratchet.
- Loosen up your wiring harness.
- Feed your harness in and it comes right out.
- Take out the motor first and then the regulator.

step 4 :Install the new regulator
- Attach the new motor to the regulator using the bolts that came with it.
- Replace the regulator and motor back into their original positions, regulator first.
- Feed the harness back through.
- Bolt the track back in.
- Tighten the regulator bolts and your power window motor bolts.

step 5 :Test
- Test the to make sure the wiring is hooked up correctly.
- Untape and attach the window.
- Test again to make sure the window isn’t straining and everything works.

step 6 :Re-assemble
- Replace the water shield.
- Reassemble the door panel.

In this video we'll be replacing a power window motor in a 2001 Chevy Impala, the same as any 2000 to 2005 Impala. The tools you'll need are a Phillips Screwdriver a Torx screwdriver #27 size, door panel clip tool or putty knife and a regular screwdriver, a rag to protect your paint and a 10 mm socket and ratchet.
This process is involved. I'm actually going to fast forward through the door panel removal and installation here at the beginning and the end. If you want to see this in real time, you just can search our other videos for Impala door panel. I'm going to apologize up ahead, because it's involved. It's not a difficult thing to do but it's involved. There is a lot of editing. This video is kind of choppy. Not exactly the best thing that I would want, but I wanted to fit it into one video. So, the ending is a little choppy but I think if you follow along, you know, use your pause if you need to, if you're doing this in your driveway. It definitely is a good video and tells you what you need to know to replace your power window motor.
Now, we need to remove this water shield. Carefully pull this. You don't want to just rip it. There's no great way to do it-
It's good like that. Now, you're going to re-plug in your power window switch here. In order to separate the window from the window regulator, you have to remove this bolt and then remove that bolt. You just want to pull the window up. You could pull it out. You just pull it into place. A little painter's tape on it. I'll add a couple more just for security. I've loosened up these three bolts for the window motor, and you'll lift it up and out. Then you're going to reach in and disconnect the wiring harness. I can't really film it, I'm going to show it to you afterwards.
You're going to loosen them up pretty good. Now, you're going to remove this bolt here, I've loosened it. And then you're going to lift up, and you'll see these two bolts, go in to larger holes and out and rotate that forward. Window motor gear with it. Eventually, the whole thing comes out. We're going to remove the power window motor to put a new one on. In a nice, flat surface, you want to be very careful. You're going to remove these three 10 millimeter bolts. This last one comes out. On this style, it's all together; but whenever you're doing this, no matter what kind of car it is, you always want to be careful because you don't want the insides of this transmission coming apart. You can flip this over and this motor comes off then you're going to put the new one on.
Not every regulator designed like this. So, if you're watching this and you have a different type of car, just be careful when you pull this apart, cause it could come apart and the cable could come apart. Everything is everywhere. Then you're in kind of a world of hurt. We'll just going to bolt it back together and put it back on.
Obviously take note of how it came apart, so you don't put it back together on a different clock position. This is a plastic housing, for one, so you don't want to break it. Here we go. I'm ready to put it back in the car again. Your new or fixed or regulator. You put the motor in, the bottom of the regulator in. That's it. You got your two bolts in here, two bolts in there. Now I'm going to find my connector and plug it into the bottom of the remote window motor. Put in this bolt right here. I'm going to tighten everything up in place. Tighten up my three regulator bolts and my three power window motor bolts. Okay it seems to be working.
So it wouldn't get stuck. I gently let the window slide down into place with the regulator. Install my two 10 millimeter bolts in there. Goes in and then tighten up. We'll turn the car on. We have regulator up and down. As you can see, as long as you know what you're doing, not that difficult of a job. Really, the most difficult part would be is if you're window motor is broken, being able to get to those two bolts that hold the window and the regulator. Usually, if your regulator is the problem, you could force the window to go into the place where you want it and get to it through these access holes.
You put your harnesses back through the plastic. Use this two screw holes here as reference point. I'm just holding those right on where they were. Then, working my arm way around, get this all stuck back from where it was. Most important is down here. Make sure it is well on here. That's what keeps the water getting around.
