Overview
Geo was an automobile brand created in the late 1980s by General Motors (GM) as a subdivision of Chevrolet. It lasted for only a little less than a decade. For better or worse, everyone knows a Geo automobile when they see one. Often depicted in the media as an automobile for the eccentric, Geo cars were economical little vehicles, and continue to be extremely reliable even though the brand since has been long discontinued.

Origin
First appearing in 1988 with an announcement that early models would be released in 1989, Geo attempted to join the growing import compact car market of the mid-1980s in America. Geo launched with four vehicles in its lineup in 1989: the Geo Metro, Geo Prizm, Geo Spectrum, and the infamous Geo Tracker. The Spectrum had originally been sold as a Chevrolet model from 1985 to 1989, but it was rebranded as a Geo model with the launch of the new brand. It was only sold for that one year and was replaced by the Geo Storm in 1990. Quickly, Geo’s diverse lineup of sedans, sport cars, subcompacts, and SUVs became synonymous with fuel efficiency and eco-friendly engineering.
Foreign Influence
Geo models were manufactured by General Motors in cooperation with three foreign automakers (Toyota, Suzuki, and Isuzu), and each of the vehicles produced aside from the Geo Spectrum were identical to other foreign vehicles. GM produced the Geo Prizm in a joint venture with Toyota. It was based on the Toyota Corolla. The Geo Metro and Geo Tracker were both produced by GM in a joint venture with Suzuki in Canada, with the Metro being identical to the Suzuki Swift and the Tracker being identical to the Suzuki Sidekick. The Geo Spectrum and Geo Storm were manufactured entirely overseas in Japan by Isuzu, with the Spectrum being based on the Isuzu I-Mark and the Storm being based on the Isuzu Impulse. Geo Metro convertibles and early Geo Trackers were also produced overseas in Japan, this time by Suzuki.
Production Life
The four main models in the Geo lineup lasted for the majority of the brand’s production life with the exception of the Geo Storm, which was discontinued in 1993 due to Isuzu discontinuing their own car lines to focus on trucks and SUVs. The Geo Metro, Tracker, and Prizm were all produced under the Geo brand until 1997. Unfortunately for the brand, consumer interest in the smaller, economic car was fading and the end became near for the Geo name.
The Geo name was officially discontinued in 1997. Awkward styling and poor marketing did little to attract consumer interest, despite the fact that all Geo automobiles were based upon popular foreign cars such as the Toyota Corolla. In the following year the Metro, Tracker, and Prizm were all moved to the Chevrolet lineup and given the Chevrolet name itself. The Geo Metro would be produced until 2001, the Prizm until 2002, and finally the last remnant of Geo, the Tracker, was discontinued in 2004.
A Lasting Impression
Although the Geo brand had a relatively short lifespan, it gained lasting notoriety. Often the basis of a joke for many, Geo automobiles are given a bad name due to their relatively weak engines and minimal stature. Those that own Geo vehicles, however, are fully aware of their benefits. Tiny engines mean excellent gas mileage, and their small size means parking is rarely an issue. Vehicles for the environmentally friendly or economically minded, Geo automobiles are still a choice among drivers today.
