What are Fuel Tank Straps and where are they Located?
Fuel tank straps are the main support for a vehicle’s diesel fuel or gas tank, whose purpose is to safely store the vehicle’s fuel supply – whether it is gasoline or diesel - until it is needed by the engine to run the automobile. Typically found underneath the rear (or side for some trucks) of the vehicle, the fuel tank straps attach to the chassis and hold the diesel fuel or gas tank in place.
When do Fuel Tank Straps Need to be Replaced?
Fuel tank straps are usually replaced due to being damaged during the removal of the diesel fuel or gas tank, or because of rust. Rusted straps can cause the fuel tank to fall off of the vehicle if severely damaged. Since they are constantly exposed to the harsh elements, the straps may need to be cut if they get stuck or their mounting hardware seizes when trying to remove the diesel fuel or gas tank.
Can I Replace Diesel Fuel or Gas Tank Straps Myself?
Replacing fuel tank straps can be a simple process, but it’s always a good idea to be cautious when working around a diesel fuel or gasoline tank. Be aware of how much fuel is in the tank before trying to remove it, as it can add a lot of weight to the tank and make it hard to balance. If necessary, a siphon may be necessary to remove excessive fuel from the tank. Since the fumes from the fuel are highly flammable, it is not recommended to use anything that may cause sparks to cut the straps; metal cutting shears or tin snips are suggested.
Need Replacement Fuel Tank Straps?
If your vehicle’s fuel tank straps are rusted, rotted, or are generally in bad shape, you run the risk that your fuel tank could get knocked around while driving on bumpy roads and thus damaged. This could cause your fuel tank to leak, causing you to waste fuel while creating a much bigger, and more dangerous, problem of fostering potential hazards such as fire and explosions, at the same time. Furthermore, and more commonly, you run the risk that the tank could simply fall out due to it not being secured in place by properly functioning fuel tank straps. If the straps are in such bad shape that the tank just falls out, other parts are likely to get damaged when this happens, such as the hoses that are connected to the tank, not to mention that your vehicle is going to come to an abrupt halt pretty quickly.
For these reasons, it’s important that you have fuel tank straps that are in good, working condition.
