What is an EGR Valve Pressure Feedback Sensor and where is it Located?

The EGR valve pressure feedback sensor is an electronic sensor that is used to control your engine’s EGR valve. It is sometimes referred to as the delta pressure feedback of EGR or differential pressure feedback of EGR (DPFE) sensor. To reduce engine emissions, modern vehicles have exhaust gas recirculation systems. These systems route gasses from the exhaust to the intake, which reduces the combustion temperatures in the engine. Reduced combustion temperatures minimize nitrous oxide emissions and prevent knocking.

Sometimes though, recirculating exhaust gasses is more of a hindrance than a help. When the engine is idle, combustion temperatures are naturally lower. So, there’s no need to add exhaust gas, and doing so would lead to a less complete combustion. EGR systems have valves that open and close to allow gasses through when needed and keep them out when they’re not needed. 

EGR valves have been controlled in different ways throughout their history. In the past they were often controlled by vacuum tubes. Today they are usually controlled by the car or truck’s onboard computer, the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU uses input from different sensors to determine when to open and close the EGR valve. 

The DPFE sensor is one such sensor. It has two vacuum hoses that connect to the EGR tube before and after the EGR valve. It senses the difference in pressure between the two sections, and converts that information into a voltage that the ECU uses to determine when to open the EGR valve. The differential pressure feedback sensor is usually found mounted to the engine firewall, near the master brake cylinder. 

How do I Know if my EGR Pressure Feedback Sensor Needs to be Replaced?

The differential pressure feedback of EGR sensor is constantly exposed to exhaust gasses. That can lead to carbon buildup on the sensor, which can make the sensor readings less accurate. The ECU can recognize a sensor reading that is too far outside of the normal range and will cause the check engine light to come on. A diagnostic scan tool will show codeS from P0401 to P0408. However, often, by the time you receive a code the car or truck might have been running poorly for some time before that. 

A bad EGR pressure feedback sensor can cause the ECU to leave the EGR valve open more than it should. That means exhaust gasses can reach the engine at idle, which leads to rough idling. Too much exhaust gas in the intake can lead to incomplete combustion. That can make the engine stumble or hesitate during acceleration, and reduce your gas mileage. 

If you are experiencing these problems, you can easily test the DPFE sensor with a multimeter. Check the voltage of the sensor’s output wire with the key on and the engine off, and then again with the engine idling. The output voltage should be the same. You can also check this output voltage against the manufacturer’s specifications. Problems that appear to arise from the DPFE sensor may actually stem from the hoses that run to it. Before you replace the sensor, visually inspect the hoses for cracks or kinks. 

Can I Replace a DPFE Sensor Myself?

As complicated as the EGR system sounds, replacing the DPFE sensor is actually pretty easy. Even a novice do-it-yourselfer can do it. The DPFE sensor is commonly mounted to the engine firewall, which makes it easy to access. You just have to unbolt the failing sensor, disconnect the wiring harness, and disconnect the two vacuum hoses. Then you can connect the wiring harness and hoses to the new sensor and bolt it into place. If problems persist after replacing the DPFE sensor, double check that you connected each hose to the correct port.
