Note: For 2007 truck models, the Classic Body Style has a crease down the center of the door skin, where on the New Body Style, the door skin is smooth. These parts are for the New Body Style truck.

Axle shafts may need replacing for a variety of different reasons. On vehicles that do heavy work or endure other extreme use you can actually break an axle or strip the splines or teeth. More often the CV joint wears out causing noises and vibration while accelerating or turning.

  1. Removing the Wheel (1:12 in the video)
    • Remove the three 18mm nuts holding the top of the strut
    • Pry off the center cap with a flat blade screwdriver
    • Loosen the 22mm lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
    • Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
    • Secure the vehicle on jack stands
    • Remove the lug nuts
    • Pull off the wheel
  2. Removing the Stabilizer Link (2:14 in the video)
    • Turn the wheel by hand
    • Hold the upper stabilizer link stud with a 15mm wrench
    • Remove the lower nut from the stabilizer link with a 15mm wrench
    • Pull off the stabilizer link
  3. Removing the Suspension (2:50 in the video)
    • Remove the shock strut with a 15mm socket and ratchet
    • Press down on the suspension and pull the strut down and out
  4. Removing the Axle (3:34 in the video)
    • Remove the center cap with a hammer and chisel and flat blade screwdriver
    • Have an assistant hold the brakes
    • Remove the 36mm nut from the hub
    • Place a flat blade screwdriver in the brake rotor
    • Remove the six 15mm bolts holding the axle to the differential
    • Pull the axle out of the differential
    • Remove the axle
  5. Installing the Axle (4:50 in the video)
    • Insert the axle into the hub
    • Insert the other end into the differential
    • Insert and tighten the six 15mm bolts
    • Torque the 15mm bolts between 55 and 60 foot-pounds
  6. Installing the Suspension (5:41 in the video)
    • Tighten the 18mm nuts to the top of the strut by hand
    • Insert the strut into place
    • Insert and tighten the 15mm bolt and clips to the bottom of the strut
    • Torque the 15mm bolt between 70 and 75 foot-pounds
  7. Reinstalling the Stabilizer Link (7:00 in the video)
    • Push the stabilizer link into place
    • Tighten the upper nut onto the stabilizer link with a 15mm wrench
    • Hold the upper nut with a 15mm wrench
    • Fasten the lower nut onto the stabilizer link with a 15mm wrench
  8. Reattaching the Wheel (7:18 in the video)
    • Slide the wheel into place
    • Start the lug nuts by hand
    • Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
    • Lower the vehicle to the ground
    • Tighten the hub nut to 156 foot-pounds
    • Tighten the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds in a crossing or star pattern
    • Reattach the center cap
    • Tighten the three 18mm nuts to the top of the strut
    • Tighten the 18mm nuts to 70 foot-pounds
