How to Replace a Serpentine Belt Tensioner on a 1997-2003 Ford F150 and Ford Expedition

Video Summary

1A Auto shows you how to repair, fix, change or replace a broken, noisy, squeaky, worn or groaning serpentine belt tensioner on 1997-2003 Ford Expedition models. This video is applicable to most Ford Trucks, F series, Excursions, Navigators, Blackwoods and Vans with a 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L V8 or V10 engine. You will first learn how to remove a serpentine belt tensioner on this vehicle, and then how to install a new replacement.

Tools Needed:

  • 8mm or 5/16in Wrench
  • 1/2in Ratchet
  • Large Wrench
  • 10mm Socket and Ratchet (may vary depending on vehicle)

Repair Steps:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable using an 8mm or 5/16 inch wrench. Remove the serpentine belt using the 1/2 inch ratchet bar and large wrench (this is described in more detail in our serpentine belt replacement how-to).
  2. The belt tensioner is attached with three 10mm bolts. Remove these three bolts using a socket and ratchet. On this particular vehicle the last bolt was difficult to access and apply enough force to loosen it. It was necessary to use an approximately 8-10 inch long two by four block of wood to contact the wrench handle and then hammer the wood to loosen the bolt. Once all three bolts are removed you can remove the serpentine belt tensioner from the vehicle.
  3. Now that we have shown you how to remove a serpentine belt tensioner from this vehicle, we will now show you how to install the new replacement. First, get the tensioner into position in the vehicle and then get the bolts started by hand. Tighten the bolts with the 10mm socket and ratchet.
  4. Reinstall the serpentine belt by referring to the routing diagram located under the hood. (Again a more detailed description of this procedure is in our serpentine belt replacement how-to)
  5. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and listen for any out of place noises.

That is how to replace a serpentine belt tensioner that needs to be changed on 1997-2003 Ford Expedition models, as well as most Ford Trucks, F series, Excursions, Navigators, Blackwoods and Vans with a 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L V8 or V10 engine.
